Mahler: Das Lied von der Erde - Klemperer

Having only just discovered this edition of Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde (conducted by Klemperer) in my library and only now hearing it for the first time, I'm delighted to say it's going straight in to my favourite, individually curated Mahler cycle; which now complete, is:

1-7 Abbado/Lucerne Festival Orchestra (BDV)
8 Wit/Warsaw Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra (BDA)
9 Abbado/Lucerne (BDV)
10 Rattle/Berlin (DVD-A)
Das Lied von der Erde/Klemperer (SACD)

Will I ever want to hear any other performances? Possibly maybe; probably no.

I like your choices very much. I am an especially huge fan of the Abbado BD-Vs, partly because of the excellent video, but my love for Maestro Abbado, who I never cared much about before, is greatly magnified by these very loving, very moving performances. I now adore and revere him.

I just watched and listened again to the amazing BD-V Bruckner 5th delivered by Abbado and these same forces the other night. Stupendous. And, I must say the sound was really quite awesome, among the best home listening/watching musical experiences I have had in a symphony I once cared for very little.

I only wish there could be more from this truly great conductor, but alas.

Klemperer in Das Lied? Another of my favorite all time conductors, especially in this repertoire.

Hey Carl, I agree the Abbado/Lucene BDVs offer outstanding enjoyment and value (I bought the 1-7 BDV boxset) and I can understand why some said in the last years of his life, Abbado was the greatest living conductor.

I've yet to move into the world of Bruckner because as you know, it takes time to get to know symphonic music and some of Mahler's music is very long indeed ;)

When I heard the Klemperer/Das Lied SACD last night, I experienced a mind bomb similar to when I heard the Abbado.Lucerne M2 for the first time and if Abbado/Lucerne deliver the same sort of bravo performance with Bruckner, it sounds like I'm in for a treat :)
