'one [of Starker's recordings] I would avoid is his coupling of the Walton and Elgar concertos, IIRC with Slatkin. The latter was so choppily played that I couldn't bear it.

To this warning, I will add the Starker: Schumann/Lalo/Saint-Saëns disc. I have listened twice, with increasing misgivings. I can't speak for the playing, because all I can hear is "soggy" sound. I've heard better redbook mono.

Definitely something odd with the way this was recorded. It is more like the sound you'd expect from a chamber orchestra performing baroque music in a smallish venue. A little muddy too, might be lacking in high-end a bit. The soundstage is fine width-wise, but doesn't have much depth. Definitely better than any mono I've ever heard though! As for Starkers playing, it's a bit choppy, but I don't mind that personally. Are you listening in 3 channel Brenda?

What are the other Mercury 35mm recordings like sonically in comparison? This is the only one I have.

dear mandel, yes, listening in 3 channel. The only other Mercury I have is the Starker Bach 2 disc set, which shows its age but is still better, sonically, than this concertos disc.

You folks should hear the performance of the Schumann by Anne Gastinel on a Naive SACD! see my review!

I have the disc - her performances of the chamber pieces are the real highlights; she's a little underpowered in the concerto. The sound is top shelf, however.

Though it's not on SACD yet, we can always hope that Sony will give us Leonard Rose under Bernstein and the NY Phil - that's a great performance!
