well, MoFi didn't *need* to improve upon the DVD-A, given that their prerogative is remastering in as authentic a way as possible based on the original masters that were used for the original historical albums, catering to those who like their remasters in as authentic a way as possible, and importantly in the best stereo sound imaginable. And that's what they more than achieved in this case and for American Beauty.
I believe you the DVD-A of Workingman's Dead sounds ace, but believe you me, this SACD sounds ace too, on its own merits, without having to compete with the DVD-A.

fausto, I don't think anyone is denigrating MoFi's Stereo remaster......in fact, based on their recent excellent Pretender's SACD remaster, I'm sure it's equally sensational as a straight DSD transfer from the original analogue tapes but for those with DVD~A multichannel capability, there IS the option of procuring the excellent Mickey Hart 5.1 remix and equally excellent stereo remaster from the (presumably) same master source.

I hear you, rammiepie. I was just reacting to fredblue's IMPLIED suggestion that given the existence of the supreme DVD-A, MoFi's remaster is only really justified if it performed a miracle by superseding the DVD-A. But why would it need to supersede the DVD-A, if both formats cater to different requirements and, what's more, if one can have both? (well, in fact, most people can't have both, since the DVD-A seems only available used, the cheapest new copy sells for 99 dollars, so a good reason to go for the MoFi for those "unlucky" ones who don't happen to have the DVD-A.)

That's the main argument, and the one I subscribe to. I did not know of the existence of this DVD-A and the MoFi is an excellent substitute to me (though one I can't compare with) as I'm very satisfied with it. I'll return to a multichannel setup one day and I know that, even if I'll regret not being able to listen to some of my favorite titles spatially, I'll also accept this fateful OOP factor, which I find to be (too) recurrent in the high-def world.
Not pointing at anyone (and certainly not at Ralph, who is a keen adept of double-dipping), I testify I have seen many complaints on the forum saying "do we REALLY need another duplicate of this title ???" from impatient buyers who were there from the beginning. Well, such a problem wouldn't exist for massive releases instead of scarce ones. I'm very happy some titles reappear that way, as I was not of the early welcomers of SA-CD and DVD-A. One has to accept re-editions if one really wants the format to carry on as they claim.

A new post on an old discussion- re. whether to get the SACD of Wkgman's Dead or American Beauty if you have the DVD-A versions, or instead of them, I'll just say that IMHO the SACD's sound much better. True, they're not multi-channel (and having an Ayre C5XEmp, a universal player that only plays in stereo, I can't comment on the relative merits of MCH), but (again, just my opinion) while Hart provided some interesting deviations in his mix, and I liked the hi-res effect upon the sound, otherwise I think his mix botched the presentation a bit- especially his excessive use of reverberance. Therefore, unless you really prefer his mix or think that you will, getting the SACD instead of, or in addition to the DVD-A is a no-brainer if you particularly like the album- MOFI did a REALLY good job on these.
