Wow, this is proof positive that it makes sense to remaster those analogue tapes. Having received it in the post just this morning, I'm now listening to it. Clearly, the RBCD version I have of this album (from the 2001 Golden Road coffin) is no match for the MoFi - although I can't tell what the HDCD layer on the CD may sound like. So much more detail can be heard and a lot more oomph overall. Comparable to the excellent Rhino remaster on vinyl of a few years back, but without the drawbacks of vinyl.

No need for multichannel! :-)

Given how wonderfully The Grateful Dead: American Beauty sounds, I'll blindly give this other title a try ! Ralph highly praises the MC DVD-As but, not being MC-equiped [yet] I can only listen to these MoFi editions for now, and I find American Beauty to be really magnificent.

Thanks this helps. I agree that sometimes a really good stereo recording that envelops the room is just as good as MCH. Plus I don't feel like I am missing something if I walk away from the sweet spot.

Looks like Amazon has this at an easy price.

They also have DVD~A at not too bad of a cost, not sure if it is MCH?

Is there a Dual Disc?

Workingman's Dead is indeed an 96/24 MLP 5.1 DVD~A and sounds just as fantastic as American Beauty.

Dualdiscs are discontinued but they're releasing more DVD~A lately which bodes well for a "dead" format!

most likely the DVD-A is MC. I'm not aware of a Dual Disc.

Incidentally, the one Dual Disc I possess (although I can't play the surround side) is Pere Ubu - The Modern Dance, the brilliant debut by the great American avantgarage band from Cleveland, Ohio!

Rammiepie says it's a great Dual Disc.
(but maybe this has already come up in discussion on some other thread).

EDIT: I was writing my response at the same time as Rammiepie's, so you already got your reply.

Ashame, fausto, you can't play the DVD side of Pere Ubu......at a loud level....it absolutely rocks and fills up the entire room front to back.

What Player do you currently have?

My Meridian 800 and 808.2 will NOT play the CD side of ANY dualdisc (but will both play the DVD sides) but my OPPO BDP~105 and Parasound D3 player has NO issues with either side.

BTW, Workingman's Dead was never released as a dualdisc. I cannot imagine the MoFi stereo SACD sounding any better. American Beauty has 192/24 on the stereo side so imagine that the stereo layer is also 192/24 on Workingman's Dead, as well.

yes, I'm ashamed to say I own a few Blurays (Abbado's late Mahler & Bruckner recordings, which some say are the absolutely best in Mahler & Bruckner recordings; I've seen him live) and a couple of DVD-A's, without being able to play them. I think we discussed this before. Just the other day, I was looking at my modest collection of DVD-A's: John Hiatt's Bring the Family, Simple Minds's Once Upon a Time, a couple of deleted Neil Youngs (Reactor and On the Beach), Sting's Nothing Like the Sun, David Crosby, a couple Depeche Mode, Genesis's Invisible Touch, King Crimson's Red, Talkings Heads (which are the European non-Dual-Disc versions, i.e. DVD-A apart from the CD) and the Pere Ubu.

Yes, I can play the CD side of the Pere Ubu Dual Disc on my SONY SACD XA5400ES, no problem, and it sounds great, but I admit, it won't be a match for the surround sound. I'd love to hear that one in surround.

It's not that I'm against MC, but currently I simply don't have to time to consider all the options before deciding on the best solution. But there will have to be a point at which I can finally play my extremely obscure DVD-A by Autechre & the Hafler Trio, which begs for surround.

fausto, I see an OPPO in your future. The swiss army knife of Universal Players.

The old DVD-A of Workingman's Dead sounds SO absolutely incredible, if Mofi have improved upon it they've pulled off a minor miracle imho!
