There are several bad reviews on "Wish You Were Here" SACD

Here is an example from this site.

In summation I have to admit that this new sacd is by no means a great success. Something happened in the transfer process. The dynamics have been spripped away. There is no air and tape hiss to be heard. Some of us remember back in the day when we would press the Dolby noise reduction button on our stereos. Suddenly the objectionable tape hiss would be removed. But with that removal....the music suddenly died and any semblance of musicality was removed. While this disc isnt nearly that bad.......it still sort of sounds like that example. Its very subtle but its there.

To some listeners this sacd might SOUND like the album they have always loved but to me it sure doesnt FEEL like the great album I always loved. This disc doesnt sound bad. Not at all. But it certainly doesnt sound very good either. Its been tamed to death. It could have.....should have been a killer.
Its so damn polite..so smooth and refined......and so damn boring.
Treble anyone????

Tell me this isn't saying the audio is bad ?

As they always say, to each his own.

keith, I read BAD reviews all the time and like yourself, if I have the disc and really think it sounds great, I naturally post a counterattack on the reviewer saying things like Time To Upgrade (but in a nice way).

That reviewer you cited who misses the hiss of the original should also realize that at the time WYWH was recorded either pro noise reduction was employed or those 2 inch tapes were travelling at 30 ips. What he was probably hearing was a poor transfer of WYWH cut from a sub master source....or his equipment was suspect.

As a rule, Analogue Productions (who released WYWH) utilizes the VERY best master tapes and James Guthrie who remixed WYWH was working from first generation masters. If you've been following this site, Guthrie is now remixing The Wall for 5.1 surround but has been faced with the obstacle of having to bake the first generation tapes in order to create the final stereo/5.1 mixes as the original Scotch master tape on which The Wall was recorded was defective (something to do with the glue binding the acetate bleeding through).

And yeah....a poor set up will result in poor sound, as well and a lot of posters have absolutely NO clue how to propoerly image their speakers and use decent power cords and interconnects.

I notice this is your very first post so welcome to SA~CD.net and 2015 promises to be a great year for 5.1 and hi res music.

Stay tuned!

I'll be giving WYWH a spin in 4.0 over the next couple of days. I recall it has a dynamic surround mix, so I'm excited about playing it again; especially because imo, my new 4.0 setup is better than any surround setup I've ever had.

I listened to War of the Worlds last night and what a treat that was; one of the very best m/c mixes for sure :)

Derek, the MOST fun I've had all year with a surround mix was undoubtedly Al Kooper's astounding remix of Blood Sweat and Tears "Child Is Father To The Man....." played loudly!

Although it was done ten years ago, my wish is that Al Kooper emerges from the shadows and joins Steve Wilson, Bob Clearmountain and Elliot Scheiner in remixing older and newer material for surround.

Congratulations on your new 4.0 set~up.

I'll keep an eye out for that one Rammie as I don't think I'd heard of BS&T until recently. As you say though, it sounds like there's some great 5.1 mixers out there and the more the merrier :)

Oh, and it looks like there's another BS&T SACD coming, although I suspect I'm one of the last to know lol

Al Kooper departed BS&T after the first album.

The second Album, entitled Blood, Sweat and Tears has a new lead singer and was a great sonic marvel for a rock recording of that period. Should sound spectacular in 4.0.

Derek.....think blues, rock and jazz because both albums embody all three elements.

Nice one Ralph. I'm quite partial to vintage bluesy rock and although none of their albums have been released in hi-res, The Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation were great and I bought the vinyl reissues earlier this year and I'm pleased to say they sound great. Another option for Steven Wilson to tackle one day!

British drummer extraordinaire Ainsley Dunbar has quite a resume having played with the likes of Journey, Bowie, John Mayall, Lou Reed, Ian Hunter, Eric Burdon, Jeff Beck, Frank Zappa, The Jefferson Starship, Whitesnake et alia.

I'm sure Steve Wilson will be touring to promote his new album so any upcoming mixing projects will be put on hold.

I don't think the man ever sleeps!
