I formatted the 4 TB WD external HD to FAT32. I then copied some DSD64 stuff to it. I connected the drive to the front USB connector. The Denon says, "No Connection".

Then I copied sample DSD64 and DSD128 stuff to an 8 GB USB flash drive formatted in FAT32. It was a pretty inexpensive flash drive. Don't know anything else about it.

I plugged it in and the Denon played the DSD64 stuff just fine. Denon shows "DSD 2.8224 MHz". Sound quality is great. No skips, crackles, nor pops.

I then attempted to play a couple DSD128 songs. Denon gave "format error".

Don't know what else to do the WD 4 TB drive to get the Denon to recognize it. Maybe a different formatting option ? Maybe I will try to use a smaller partition instead of the whole 4 TB dedicated to a single partition.

Any other ideas would be appreciated. The Denon menu isn't bad. Just a generic directory arrangement. But it does display an album cover when the song is playing. Automatically plays the next song on the drive. If the external drive worked, it might be a good way to listen to DSD music.

frankpc, I tried this on Google Translate with no success. Music to some ears no doubt. ?:-(

Which receiver are you referring to?

The 7200 plays DSD files from USB storage and it plays PCM up to 24/192.

Sorry, I thought you were talking about your Denon receiver, which can also play files

I see. My receiver is a Denon 7200wa. I just have to learn more about this stuff. I didn't realize working with DSD was so much different than working with PCM.

The best source of expertise I've found is from the people on this thread.

Current issues: Need to figure out why I can't play DSD64 over the LAN. The PC couldn't block any data from the DSD64 bitstream could it? I am guessing the Denon determined the LAN was too slow for DSD. Not sure if that makes sense. PCM is recognized and works.

And I need to determine whether an s/pdif cable would handle the two channel DSD64 stuff from the PC to the Denon.

I then copied several more songs to the first partition and they all showed up and play. I also included a 24/192 flac. and a 192 wav. Those played as well. I also have a DSD64 Multichannel track. Got a "format error" from the Denon with that.

...

Thanks for your interest and help!

As a simple experiment, you could try copying that DSD 64fs multi-channel track to your USB flash drive to verify functionality.

I would be very interested in the results of that.

Also check the manual, to see what the player's limitations are concerning storage media (does it support MBR partitions only or also GPT, formatted in NTFS or only FAT32?) and concerning music files (PCM/DSD, file format, stereo/multichannel, maximum sampling rate).

FAT32 limitation is becoming rare, but many devices insist on MBR, which limits the drive size to 2TB. Most people use portable USB-powered hard drives (no bigger than 2TB currently) for this purpose, so they don't have this issue.

As lain suggested, try with a "basic" USB stick first, to exclude storage format limitations
