Very hopeful for DSD downloads but what have people's experiences been?

Looks like acousticsounds has plenty of APO SACD's / DSD downloads to compare.

I'm interested in any impressions but in particular their Junior Wells Hoodoo Man and/or The Nat King Cole Trio

Best,
Michael

An interesting one is "Tea for the Tillerman" where the SACD came from a PCM DAC and the DSD Download was transferred from Analog Tape.

Haven't heard the Junior Wells but The Nat King Cole Story is off the charts good.

I would not call my comparisons extensive, but my view is everything sounds slightly but noticeably better via hard drive playback vs. the player mechanism for the silver disc on the players I have heard. So, if the recording is bit identical, the download to hard drive will sound better than the disc. Copying downloads to silver discs for playback should be avoided in favor of hard drive.

As bmoura points out, though, downloads might not be bit-identical, as they might have a different master than the silver disc. Some might be better, as he says. But, some "hi rez" downloads may be merely uprezzes of CD masters. That is truer of certain sites and certain musical genres. So, be careful.

OK very interesting - especially where I have somewhat valuable OOP sacd's now available to download. this is especially tempting where the mastering is a match - as the APO's seem to be.

How does the HDTracks Tea for the Tillerman compare with the DSD download?

How does the HDTracks Tea for the Tillerman compare with the DSD download?

I study multiple DR. Loudness versions quite frequently and HDTracks is many times not as good as other vinyl, SACD and RBCD versions.

I personally have purchased some Hi Res Flac's to compare to my SACD's as an experiment and unfortunately I cannot tell the difference, that said, I personally like reading liner notes, cool packaging and pictures, etc.
So at moment Hi Res down load is there, I have accounts, Bluesound vault, everything in place but not worth the money or format for me.

Now I do have a Hi Res Tidal steaming Hi Res account at $20.00 a month which I and my wife especially find to be wonderful. There data base is larger than HDTracks.

When somebody on SACD.net says Oh, you should check these cool SACD's that are coming out, I go to Tidal to see if I even like the music, rather than waste a purchase.

This site advertises for PrimePhonic which is a good site but only carry's classical music.

On a lark I downloaded two DSD albums. I own both on their APO sacd release.

Way back when I bought these sacd's, one had blown me away (Willy and the Poor Boys).
The other I had been very disappointed with (Ella Fitzgerald Clap Hands Hear Comes Charlie).

Now, doing an A/B sacd vs DSD download, my first impression was that I preferred the sacd of Willy and the Poor boys over the DSD download. Much more liquid on the disc. The opposite of what I was expecting (hoping). Strange since I believe these are bit perfect identicle files (?)

Ella was close disc vs download.

Two big caveats. One is that my main system is offline in the middle of a big upgrade. The other is - that I may have a set up problem on my OPPO.

If I may hi-jack my own thread:

My first download listen was Synology DS214play--->Minimserver & bubble---->ethernet---->OPPO set with forced DSD playback

I tried again - this time with the download files directly on a USB thumb drive. Sounded better than before.

Hmmm? Thought appreciated.

Even more interesting is why didn't they do the SACD from the analog tape. I don't know of anyone who likes this SACD.

You may not know anyone personally, but 41 out of 45 on this site like it and the reviewers generally gave good to great reviews.

Tea for the Tillerman sounds great on SACD as does the Ella Fitzgerald's Clap Your Hands, Here Comes Charlie SACD, both from AP.

The future may be bright with DSD Digital downloads but until cessation of SACD physical disc manufacturing why try to kill off the format prematurely by posting nonsense when perhaps a hardware upgrade might be in order?

True. But if you compare Tea for the Tillerman on SACD with the DSD Download, you will find that the DSD Download sounds much better.

As for SACDs & DSD downloads in general, there's no need to see it as a battle between one and the other. I say, enjoy both.

After all, there are albums that are not yet available as DSD Downloads and there are others (like the new Sinatra series from Universal Music/Digital Reprise) by Frank Sinatra that are not available on SACD. Why not enjoy both if you have the audio system to do so?
