like most users of this excellent website i MAINLY collect classical discs, but have a significant collection of other sorts of music. like contributors to other threads i have e.g. a hankering to get the classic steely dan albums on multichannel, but also wonder has anyone reading this any info on whether the U2 catalogue might some day be given the 5.1 treatment? i wonder what's stopping them doing it?! any thoughts/comments/info would be appreciated....

I think this question can be asked about any succesful pop artists who haven't reissued (or haven't plans to do so) a substantial part of their back catalogue in surround, i.e. everyone except Depeche Mode.

This among so many rock albums would be a dream come true, along with led zeppelin, the beatles, the band, mahavishnu orchestra, tony williams lifetime, the smiths, jeff buckley, i could go on forever... Go to U2.com and bring it up on it's forum. A few of these big names could probably breathe life in sacd!

I tried to find the forum you mention above but could n't find it!
Anyway, like I have said many times the CD version of "Joshua Tree" was never up to the sonics of the Lp.
I m not a great fan...but I do hope Joshua Tree is eventually remastered to do justice to a fine album.

I thought when U2 released the whole catalog on iTunes, Universal may have "remeastered" their more popular albums.
Unfortunately the conglomo beast is driven by market and it appears everyone is godsmack with Mp3...

Funny for agex I placed numerous posts on the Seal site for a SACD release and eventually Warner released Seals catalog on DVD-A... sometimes they do listen....I don;t know....

According to reports here and there ( http://community.netscape.com/n/pfx/forum.aspx?tsn=1&nav=messages&webtag=ws-music&tid=89460&redirCnt=1 & http://digg.com/music/Commemorating_20_years_of_The_Joshua_Tree ), Universal Music Group was to release this June a "two-disc Joshua Tree 20th Anniversary Collectors' Edition, with Disc One featuring the original 1987 album, digitally remastered with bonus tracks, likely to be B-sides such as Spanish Eyes, Walk To The Water and Race Against Time, and perhaps some outtakes. Disc Two is a DVD with the album remixed in DTS/Dolby Digital 5.1 & PCM stereo, plus promo video clips. In the UK, Disc One is reported to be in multichanned hybrid SACD."

Sounds like an excellent idea in the same shape as the Depeche Mode and Genesis releases but it's August now and I still haven't heard anything else about this.

Wow - that would truly be something to have The Joshua Tree on SACD. I've always kind of liked the fact that U2 refused to remaster it - I love the sound on this album (and I had it as an album before CD) - it has a very smooth, analog recording quality that I was always afraid would be changed by an overzealous remastering engineer.

Some of Joshua Tree's tracks apparently have been remastered, however, for the U2 Greatest Hits cd's - don't know how they sound. DSD would probably do justice to this album and perhaps the original intent of the band, the producer and the mastering engineer in terms of the sound. Although I'm usually in favor or remasterings, this is one case where poorly thought out intervention could make a really good album into something different.

Does anyone have anything else in DTS/Dolby Digital? I recently purchased the new Rush album "Snakes and Arrows" in the MVI release, which also includes a 2-channel hi-rez stereo mix. I don't think the quality is quite up to SACD, but it's certainly much better than ordinary CD. The multi-channel mix is quite interesting and to compare rock to classical demonstrates how differently many artists/producers approach the use of center and rear channels. Hall ambience is not their first consideration - more along the lines of using these channels as integral parts of a new sonic painting for the album.

That would be just great, but given the fact, that the date has passed and nothing even is on the official page of U2 I think they abandoned the project just like the planned 5.1 mix of Elton Johns 'Captain And The Kid' and David Gilmours 'On an Island'.
Again, I just do not get the policies of the lables. They churn out special editions with so little content of value and extra DVD's, Special packagings like the Yusuf Album. Surely that must be as expensive as producing a Stereo SACD at least. Or am I wrong? The whole batch of Tori Amos' last Album on 180g Vinyl was deffectiv. (We opened five of them in the store, they all went back. What a waste.) I am sure a Stereo SACD had done the deal cheaper.

But, back to the thread, I dearly hope that this thing got not shelved. U2 in surround is big time! Just imagine Achtung Baby...oh wow! Hopfully Universal sees how the Genesis and DP remasters sell.

I would love "October" on SACD. What SACD needs is a indie re-release label. Rights could be bought for albums. I'm just not sure how many you could sell.

Maybe Pentatone might branch into this area. Do you think there would be 500 people to buy a Hybrid SACD? If so, its as viable as 200g vinyl.

I would love to somebody to release Brian Eno Music for Airports (already DSD mastered). I would buy 20 copies personally just to make it happen!

Daniel.

Yeh, thats right.. we should be sending some emails to them. Since the DSD mastering has already been done, maybe they can get the rights?

Daniel.
