Mark, have a wonderful Jamaican vacation. Was only there briefly a few years ago and it's beautiful. Bring me back some "samples."

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, just finished playing the DVD~A 5.1 (MLP) of Crowded House which I haven't played in a long, long time. Forget how incredible it was with that beautiful hit Don't Dream It's Over...http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=crowded+house+don#view=detail&mid=3F32BF59E20D203BEB683F32BF59E20D203BEB68 GREAT recording and fantastic use of surrounds. From Capitol.

Brett, played inuksuit today again....this time on the Meridian 800 (vs. the Oppo BDP~105) and it was simply amazing. Took on an organic nature all its own and the immersion was much more complete than on the OPPO. You're probably correct in assuming that it's more of a performance piece but it was recorded in the wilderness so good luck with that. BTW, Adams was born in Meridian, Mississippi.

Thanks Ralph,

Sounds like there will be samples a plenty.

As I was purging the DVD~A surround catalog I hesitated on Crowded House, but I do love the song Don't Dream It's Over.

Rickko mentioned to me about me that I said the sub worked in the 4.0 of The Guess Who in my review.

I have to check tonight, but if my sub is working on a 4.0 recording, using HDMI, do I have my system hooked up wrong? Would it be part of the Audessy correction setting?

Anybody have this/that experience?

Audio might be routed to the sub is crossover is set too high. If for example, the crossover is set to 80hz and your processor detects audio below this, then I guess all audio below 80hz will be routed to the sub, even if it's not a native .1 soundtrack.

Very interesting, I will have to check that out.

Hi Mark, In order for Audyssey to be most effective all speakers need to be set to "small" after microphone calibration so if you have your AVR set accordingly the sub will be active on any and all HDMI sourced material, 2.0, 4.0, 5.1 etc. There is far more processing power allocated to bass management when all speakers are set to "small" and the end result is smooth bass response and increased resolution/detail all around. Hope this helps.

Neil, highly appreciate your feedback.
OK, That is good news as they are set to "small".
And that is the correct answer, thank you.
I still have to look at my Khz sub setting when I get home.

When I talked to McIntosh on there view of Audessy, they said, like you say, that Audessy incorporates the sub as a whole unit, rather than as I had before, a separate unit.

Honestly there are times when I do not like Audessy as it takes away the giant sub and makes it softer, and sometimes I crave the big boomer.

Speaking of, what do you guys think of this power conditioner? Seems like a good price?

Re: Shunyata Research power conditioner, Markie....I have two (PS 8) and they transformed my system. I also use their power cords, as well, and deem it mandatory for the "total effect." I have an older SONY projector in my summer home which I was NEVER happy with and when I used a minimal SR cord.......POW!

In my main system, I'm using the more expensive SR Hydra (3).........transformed that system, as well.

I'd say GO FOR IT. But the cords are a mandatory purchase, as well......use one on your McIntosh Player and McIntosh Pre/Pro and even on your sub if it has a detachable cord: http://www.musicdirect.com/p-9670-shunyata-venom-3-power-cable.aspx

If you buy three from Music Direct they are $125 each (I've purchased them for as low as $109 each when they have their 10% discount sales). I also finagle 20% off their SACDs when making these purchases with free shipping included. Music Direct IS a great dealer....period!

You will notice an instantaneous improvement but they get better after a week break~in period!

Hey, bro, you've literally spent thousands on music purchases........buying these conditioners/power cords is like a walk in the park!

I've spent well over $15K on SR power conditioners/power cords AND NEVER LOOKED BACK. Am THRILLED with them!

POW! as in POWERS.
You know you always sell me Ralphie, good to know. I think I will order as I start to tweek my system with sparkle and glitter. I might have to build a new cabinet as my current power wires are jammed in a ball behind cabinet.

Speaking of, I was blown away by the goofy cover of absolutely great sounding SHM SACD Jimmie Smith, The Cat, I remember when you where gonna get it and I thought, geez, the CAT???? Highly Recommend.

I was reading the SACD.net thread, /showthread/115745/121677/y#121677

about PCM/DSD and it is explained very well by good people but my hillbilly brain has a real hard time understanding.

I feel like I want to add DSD equipment for DSD download, but I remain confused. I think because on some level I don't trust Hi Rez downloads with there, sometimes, weak DR levels. It is absolutely about money and I would hate to spend money and have a placebo only effect that my monkey ears can't tell the difference.

Mark, DSD vs.PCM has been an ongoing debate for years.

If I didn't have my Meridian PCM system (EVERYTHING gets converted to PCM) I'd probably invest in DSD but if you heard what the Meridian does for DVD~A/RBCD (probably sounds as good or better than those VERY expensive Meitner, Playback Design and dCS SACD players) you wouldn't be so wowed by it.

Start with the SR power cords/conditioners (a relatively inexpensive upgrade) and then work your way up.

When you come back from Jamaica with a "cleared" head........then you can plot your next BIG move!

Compared to PCM, there is very little DSD material out there: RBCD/BD~V/A/DVD~A/DVD are ALL PCM~based and in my world.....the MAJORITY RULES!
