Hold on to your 50" plasma until it disintegrates. Even my Meridian man told me that 4K for anything under 65" is a waste but I was totally smitten at a recent visit to Best Buy by their curved 4K screens with picture generated by hard drive.......absolutely uncanny. And they're not true 4K TVs (those standards will be set in stone in late December).

Exactly. My Japanese manufactured Hitachi 55" plasma is now almost 10 years old and has had one major board replaced in that time (a real dog to unmount for repair - it is one heavy sucker) and I would have it repaired again - even rebuilt - it is so good, and I just can't see anything on the market to better it.

I have seen the 55" curved Samsung OLED and it sure is sexy, but I have a feeling it is one of those cases of the instant attraction turning to boredom and then dissatisfaction with it being superficially attractive but lacking much in the depth department long term.

Additionally, since OLED is a VERY new technology, there is no guarantee that it will endure the test of time.

But I will stand by my statement that the hard drive generated pictures at Best Buy were immensely jaw dropping and as anyone knows, most well mastered blu rays do wipe the floor in comparison to viewing the same movies on cable or those generated by streaming. And of course the BD~V's lossless codecs are superior to DD 5.1.

Am still looking forward to 4K x 2K even though the motion picture glomerates have VERY little interest in supplying the discs (except, of course, for SONY who manufactures TVs and owns Columbia Pictures and its affiliates).

Sorry, but your $4k 10-year-old Hitachi is significantly bettered by just about everything on the market today or in the last 5 years.
That's the thing about video, there are codified measurements that accurately translate into objective performance.

Not trying to say you shouldn't love and be happy with your Hitachi but my last gen Panasonic plasma or a 5 year old Kuro outperforms it in every way.

I have an older gen JVC DILA projector and while it looks as good as the day I bought it and had it calibrated(with a bulb refresh), it gets killed by my friend's latest gen JVC.

Rubbish. "Just about everything on the market today"? Crap. The cheaper plasmas around in the past 5 years don't hold a candle to the top early Japanese built ones which were hugely overbuilt.

I would buy that some of the very high end plasmas from a few years ago are probably bettered by the very top line recent plasmas, but those are very expensive and largely now discontinued. There are really no great plasmas being built anymore.
