The only reviewer:
"Assuming there's been no fiddling with the results"
surely this must be the case.

or else what ....
do we seriously believe players are mis-reading 0s or 1s when not SHM'd ?

I am a non-beleiver.
I would buy this, but surely it must be a con ?

Someone who has the possibility (modded PS3) could rip both SACDs and compare their data content, to rule out a manipulation.

Both disks should be ripped a few times to see if there are reading errors, and if there are more on the normal SACD. Then compare the SACD to the SHM version. If there is a consistent difference, it is either a con job, or the extra DA/AD conversion* in SHM is detrimental to the signal, making them different as advertised.

*) if I remember correctly SHM system resamples the data for some obscure (marketing) reason, which never improves the signal.

Here is something you don't like:

The sampler contains a cut from the Mobile Fidelity Marvin Gaye SACD "What's going on". This is a pure DSD mastering from the 2008 SACD, released by MoFi.
- The hybrid sampler sounds identical to the hybrid SACD from MoFi.
- The SHM disc sounds a little bit better in the same way these discs always sound: a bit more "analogue" and transparent, like listen more directly into the DSD studio master.

For CDJapan's current asking price of $13.37 it's well worth it to do the comparison for oneself. It's a generous sampling (TT: 71:13) across all genres of music and does contain a hybrid SACD as well as a single layered SHM~SACD.

Two different things going on with SHM: if it is a better data carrier (not) and if it sounds better (possible).

Sounding better does not mean it is more true-to-source, there are extra steps in the SHM manufacturing process which can alter the sound in a pleasant way. Some people prefer vinyl and tape to pure digital, because there is more harmonic distortion and loss/softening of high frequencies, plus hiss. From purely scientific viewpoint these are distortions, but if somebody prefers a distorted signal to the pure one, fine. This means we need to say if we are talking about better data transfer (scientific viewpoint) or manipulated "better" sound (purely subjective).

It's because of the opposite that I love these SHM-SACDs: there is actually LESS distortion created when optical reading of these discs.

Good ears you have, normal SACD (DVD) has about one uncorrectable read error in 150 hours of play, if SHM SACD has none, and you can hear it as less distortion...

I decided a year (or was it two?) ago, that I'd buy this album. Why? Well I thought it'd give me easy access (i.e. good value) into a variety of music. What caught my eye was the track by 10cc and Wishbone Ash amongst others.

I carried out a very important audio test when I popped one of the SACDs into my player.

I sat down and listened, and asked myself, "Do I like the way it sounds and what I hear?" Yes, was the answer.
