following up on this thread
/showthread/122826//y?page=first

I just received my copy in the post, and looking at the recording info, it might be that sylvian had a point in claiming, in above thread, that Praga does no longer do DSD recording. Unlike all my previous Praga SACDs (which say "DSD recorded"), this one has "Multichannel SACD recording", which is so vague as to suggest that the recording process could be anything from 16/44.1 onward. I don't have the other most recent of theirs Janacek: String quartets, Concertino - Prazak Quartet to check, whether this is just an anomaly in the booklet description, or is an indication indeed of a change in their recording process.
Just to be sure: I haven't listened to this disc yet!

Note: recording producer and sound/balance engineers are the same people as on the second most recent Praga I have Brahms: String Sextets - Prazak & Zemlinsky Quartets

Is the Brahms a DSD recording?

Yes, it is, based on what the booklet indicates: "DSD Multi-Channel recorded...DSD Processing and mastering: etc..."

For the Shostakovich this has been changed into: "Multichannel SACD recordings....SACD edited by etc..."

Thanks-- you're right, not too encouraging re the Shostakovich.

I've always been puzzled as to the reason you lot single out the recording type (DSD/PCM) to focus on exclusively.

There are a host of variables that will affect the sound quality of the finished recording, but the recording type is almost inconsequential in comparison.

For a brief glimpse of a few of those variables, have a go at this forum:

Maybe people should listen to it before condemning it.

Who speaks of 'condemning'? As I said, I haven't listened to the disc yet. I was just following up on an earlier discussion concerning the recording of the Mandelring no. 15, and a point Sylvian raised regarding Praga's putative recent recording process.

Not directly, but allusions to it? Certainly.

no, not even alluding to it. The proof of the pudding is in the eating: I shall report upon having listened (and compared to the Mandelring).
