Discussion: Mahler: Symphony No. 2 - Mehta

I just listened to this disc tonight for the first time and wow, it's both immense and awesome! I hadn't heard any Mahler before never mind any other version of his 2nd Symphony, but it's thoroughly impressive. I don't feel confident enough to write a proper review because as I say, I've nothing to compare this edition to, but just wanted to start a discussion about it because it's a marvellous symphony. My favourite symphony up until now is/was Shostakovich's 5th, but that just might change.

Fwiw, I listened to it via my HD650s and used my Lavry DA11 DAC as headphone amp. My speakers are the very bass-lite, but very musical mk1 Linn Kans and probably aren't suitable for such full scale orchestral music, but I'll give it a go next time I play it, which won't be too far away. :)

Now you'll end up collecting Mahler cycles like the rest of us ...

This is also the recording I discovered the Mahler 2 with, and still one of my favourites.

I would interject that this Japanese release costs over $100 from Amazon.com, while the fairly new release on Blu Ray Audio from Decca can be had for much, much less! And the Blu Ray Audio sounds absolutely fantastic. I highly recommend it.

Thanks for the heads up, John. Just ordered it for $16 delivered. And I will have to concur that the Decca BD~A releases, in general, have been spectacular.

This SHM SA-CD is a jewel.

I was hoping so much to see it at normal price once again, and I was right to insist looking at it though I had to wait for two years before seeing some last copies available again.

I received it last week. Played it three times in a row the first evening. Four times the evening after, and listened to it several times this week-end.

I always loved respectively this piece and this conductor... And the synergy of the two is a winning combination !
