Agreed nydo. Does anyone have a list of such gems that we might salivate over?

Until we actually know what recordings were made with surround channels, it isn't particularly useful to speculate on what would/or could be released. I am sure they will be searching for materials, and I hope that some of the more idiomatic recordings from that period show up with 4 channel tapes. My personal hopes would include a number of Ozawa/Boston recordings, as they made their best recordings in this period, and several of them don't have much competition, including the DeFalla Three Cornered Hat, the Respighi Roman Trilogy and Ancient Airs and Dances, the Ives recordings, the Bartok recordings, the Stravinsky/Berg Violin Concertos with Perlman (possibly with a more natural balance?), and Schoenberg Gurrelieder. Their performances of Brahms 1 and Tchaikovsky 5 capture some really beautiful wind playing, though there is a lot of competition out there, and the BSO Chamber Players recordings of Stravinsky and Schoenberg would be wonderful to have in surround.

I also would be happy if the Giulini/Chicago Mahler 9 had a surround tape, as that is a special performance.

This is a great list...lots of stuff here I'd want in Quad. Of course, if they do the Respighi Roman Trilogy I hope they remember to put in the nightingale, which they forgot to include on Respighi: Pini di Roma, Feste Romane, Fontane di Roma - Ozawa.

Mr. Mowrey has a discography here that I suspect he put together himself: http://www.discogs.com/artist/272491-Thomas-Mowrey. I'd think his early-mid 70s DGG recordings are reasonably likely to have quad masters based on his posts here.

I need to amend my previous post. Gurrelieder was recorded by Philips, so it presumably wouldn't have a 4 channel mix, or it would have already been released. One recording that I forgot to mention is the Berlioz Romeo and Juliet with BSO and Ozawa. I notice that Mowrey also lists the Hindemith/Steinberg disc; that would also be a really nice one to have in quad.

I had nothing to do with assembling the discography on Discogs, but looking at it brings back lots of nice memories.

I made simultaneous quad and stereo masters for every recording that I produced for DG. The quad recordings and mixes were made in such a way that folding the rear channels into the front at a one-to-one ratio resulted in the ideal stereo mix.

Very cool.

The Steinberg recordings are obviously famous. I suspect DGG will be loath to license out the Steinberg Planets/Zarathustra because they've recently released Holst: The Planets, Strauss: Also Sprach Zarathustra - Steinberg as a stereo-only BD-A, but as mentioned, the Hindemith would be a great choice.

The Bernstein Liszt Faust symphony would also be a great choice - it's one of the pieces mentioned occasionally as a repertoire gap on SACD, and it's a great performance to boot.

Otherwise, it looks like there's a lot more Ozawa conducting Ravel in the mix, along with his recordings of Bartok and American composers. I'd be glad for that. As I understand it Ozawa has a broad global appeal, so releasing these discs would seem to be a sound business choice for Pentatone - and of course good musically as well.

I'd personally really enjoy some of the Fiedler albums, especially Danse Infernale, although I know his stuff is dated a bit (also, his Living Stereo recordings are out on SACD, and there's also a lot of Erich Kunzel on SACD).

Any comments about this (Recorded in 1970)?

I'm looking forward that Pentatone will re-release this classic account in their REMASTERED CLASSICS. Is it possible? I want to hear your comments.

The discs had recorded in the middle of 1970s by using analogue technology (AAA Stereo). Kleiber's approach is still - I bought the album about five years ago - my own favorite. There are lots of noises and different effects: the off-stage voices - discussions, demonic laugh etc. The Wolf Glen's Scene is simply terrific. What do you think? I really hope that this is also quad.

Karajan recorded Puccini's "Tosca" in 1979 with legendary soloists: Jose Carreras (Cavaradossi), Katia Ricciarelli (Tosca) and Ruggero Raimondi (Scarpia). One of the latest analogue recordings. It would be nice to hear it on surround although we have this: Puccini: Tosca - Sir Colin Davis

Could we please have seperate threads for a release wishlist and actual releases? This is getting confusing ...

Thomas,

Would only your work be used for future release by Pentatone? Were there others involved in recordings produced during those years by DG and would they have been produced in 4 channel?
