Luukas,

Pentatone has so far limited themselves to reissues of quad recordings, and I don't think the legendary Mahler 9 live recording was recorded in quad. As you probably know, it was recently released on SACD by Esoteric.

Oh, yes.

There is also Herbert von Karajan's performance with Berliner Philharmoniker. Perhaps it was recorded in quad.

Here are my own wishes to Pentatone's REMASTERED CLASSICS series...

So, I think you're a little off on the dates for quadraphonic recordings...most of them were made in the early-mid 70s. By the late 70s, while the recordings were all being done to 8 or 16 tracks or more, there was no quad master being produced. Except for a few recordings of unusual value, DGG and other labels have shown little interest in going through the cost of producing a new multichannel master from the original multitrack tapes.

As a result, you're only going to see releases from Pentatone where a quad master already exists, and that's going to mostly be recordings from 1970-1975 or so. A more interesting question is whether Pentatone will get access to the scores of quad recordings done by Decca (which I would think would be doable given their connection to Universal).

Do they absolutely have to have been recorded in quad? I would think that most recordings had a pair of mics in the rear of the hall to pick up room ambience and were most likely assigned to separate tracks. Couldn't they be used for the rear channels?

Could be, but they'd have to go back to the original multitracks and create a new MCH master. Pentatone has just been taking existing 4-channel masters and releasing those - much less of an expense.

Even more compelling/exciting IMO would be for Pentatone to gain access to the Quadraphonic masters from EMI UK, Electrola Germany and Angel USA. Some incredible treasures there!

Karl Böhm's interpretation of Strauss' "Salome" (1970) is also would be nice on SACD.

Totally agreed. The EMI DVD-Audio releases only scratched the surface. I suspect that Pentatone has a much closer line to Universal, given that they've done all the Philips and now the DG quad masters, but if Warner wants to try to monetize their fairly expensive purchase on favorable terms to Pentatone, all the better for us.
