Sony XA9000ES player does it.

Yes and afaik possibly other sonys of same vintage also (i have xa9000es). I meant no current hardware does dsd processing.

OK - so just to follow up on my original query. I bought a Sony STR DH 550 AV receiver and connected my Sony bluray player, BDPS480, and connected them via HDMI.

Result - success (I believe!). The TV screen tells me the SACD is being output as multichannel DSD and the AVR is also claiming to decode and output surround sound DSD. Very happy with the results but I cannot put into words. Was there some quote from Frank Zappa like "writing about music is like trying to explain architecture through dance."

I had some trouble playing a pure audio bluray disc which was being output at 48KHz(Janine Jansen - four seasons), but after much fiddling and googling discovered that the 'BD mixed audio' setting on the BluRay player must be set to off to enable the full hires transfer across PCM/DTS/Dolby.

Right, this all means that buying music in future is going to be

a/ from a more restricted range of titles
b/ will be a heavier load on the pocket

because the sound is so good I will be unlikely to settle for less.

Good choice. You now have reliable kit that will last at least until you get the urge to upgrade. : )

If AVR is processing DSD bitstream, then the SA-CD GUI will indicate "DSD Multi" or "DSD 2 Ch" in the upper right quadrant.

WRT paragraph 3, the "BD Audio MIX" configuration setting problem is a common set-up issue. It took a few hours to sort when I initially set up my BDP-S770 in 2010. I've noticed this elsewhere since then.

EDIT: When "BD Audio MIX" is set to "ON", it will output PCM only. DTS HD Master Audio and Dolby True HD will be encoded as PCM during playback. Typical use of this setting is for use when playing film and commentary tracks concurrently, as the latter are normally PCM encoded.

Enjoy it.
