I just received a reply from AF's Marshall Blonstein and forwarded him a list of my candidates for possible SACD multichannel release, as per HIS request.

Naturally, a high priority on My list were the two former Steely Dan QUAD releases: Countdown to Ecstasy and Can't Buy A Thrill, Joni Mitchell's Court & Spark, Gordon Lightfoot Sundown, Paul Simon Graceland, Jefferson Airplane: Worst Of The Jefferson Airplane, the Guess Who: Best of, Bette Midler: The Divine Miss M, Laura Nyro: Eli & the Thirteenth Confession, etc, etc.

He inquired as to where I heard the rumor: My reply: Quadraphonic Forum and I also told him that a similar rumor mill post was started at SA.CD.net.

Get your e~mails sent and list of QUAD/5.1 titles ready, fellas.....this might well become a reality.

the "rumor" was started by Brian Moura (High Fidelity Review) posting over @QQ to the effect that Audio Fidelity's CEO had told him he was seriously considering releasing MultiChannel SACDs and was fielding suggestions of titles that are in demand by Quaddies & 5.1 fans.

Actually David (aka "Cupboy") on the QQ Forum was the music fan who started the thread by quoting an email from Audio Fidelity's President Marshall Blonstein on the end to 24K Gold CDs and their investigation of adding Multichannel to some Audio Fidelity SACD releases. (See message #1 at http://www.quadraphonicquad.com/forums/showthread.php?18765-AF-to-do-surround-SACDs )

It's certainly an interesting possibility.

I have no doubt whatsoever, if Mr. Blonstein chooses wisely from the very long list of unreleased (on 5" physical disc) QUAD titles, he might have a runaway success on his hands.

AP's multichannel SACD of Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here remains the highest charting SACD in Acoustic Sound's history and remains so to this day.

Of course, the condition of those 70's QUAD masters will be a determining factor as to what gets released but with the use of the RBCD, stereo and multichannel layers, every fanboy of hi res music will at least get to pick and choose what piques their interest.

BRAVO!!!

Adam, get busy and convey your support by e~mailing Mr. Blonstein.

For years we have been speculating about these mythical Quad releases stuffed away in some vault unreleased except on poorly executed vinyl with substandard decoders.

Now is the chance to revel in those old chestnuts which contained some incredible music across literally all genres.

Has any label reissued SACD from quad tapes before?

AFAIK, Pentatone is one of the only labels doing QUAD SACDs (from Philips QUAD masters)

Usually the province of DVD~V: Gentle Giant, Rhino's 2 Quadio releases, a few BD~A 4.0 remasters, etc.

It might be quite possible to extract a center channel from existing QUAD masters but will probably be 5.0, at best.

I asked Mr. Blonstein about releasing the QUAD masters of Joan Baez's Diamonds and Rust (A&M) on SACD and he told me that the QUAD master tapes were unusable which, hopefully, is not the case for a lot of those early 70 relics (tape print through, oxide flaking, defective magnetic tape....Scotch had a bad batch of Professional reel tape in the 70's~early 80's which is rendered unusable today.....i.e. Pink Floyd's The Wall was recorded on this particularly bad batch of Scotch Magnetic Tape which is why they're having trouble doing a 5.1 remix from existing multitrack masters).

I thought Vanguard/Artemis released a number of quad SACDs as well. But no question that Pentatone has been the most prolific.
