Hello,
I work with an after-school group of around 20 4th and 5th graders at Benteen Elementary in southeast Atlanta. All of our students are Hispanic or African-American and come from low-income families; the average household income at Benteen is around $17,000.

One of the initiatives I have undertaken is expanding the musical horizons of our students beyond hip-hop and mainstream pop. We've received a few donations so far, but could always use more.

All donations are appreciated whether classical or not, new or gently used. In addition to full-lengths, compilation CDs, CD samplers, promotional CDs, etc. are welcomed.

Donations can be mailed directly to the school:
HOA After-School
Benteen Elementary
200 Casanova St
Atlanta, GA 30315

Thanks for your time. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments.

Specifically, what would you like to acquire? Mozart? Beethoven? Schubert? If you could go to a store and purchase whatever you wanted to, what would be the first 20 cds you would get?

Make a list and as we sent you discs, we can respond on this forum that the item has been sent.

Saying "send anything" is ok but can be vastly improved on if you suggest a listening program you would like to expose these kids to.

I am particularly interested if you wish to introduce these kids to classical music, to know how you propose to do it.

What appeals to fourth and fifth graders? My own interest in classical music was non-existent til I was about 14. But I suppose that if I had charismatic teachers who knew what they were doing, that might have occurred earlier.
