I just finished watch "Pianomania," an interesting documentary that focuses on the care and detail that Steinway's master tuner lavishes on his instruments. Among the pianists he works with is Pierre-Laurent Aimard. During the recording session for Aimard's recording of Bach's "The Art of Fugue," a DGG engineer is testing the microphones and references two of them as "surround left and surround right." This implies they recorded the music in multi-channel, but to my knowledge, they only issued it in RBCD format. Does anyone know anything about an SACD release?

I think they make almost all their recordings in surround, despite releasing only CDs, and occasionally DVD/Blu-ray.

Not quite what you asked, but there is a ridiculously OOP DVD-Audio of Aimard playing Messaien's Vingt Regards Sur L'Enfant Jesus.

Where did you get this "Pianomania" documentary?

Is it available on BD?

EDIT: Please disregard this post as I found it. Sadly, it's DVD and 4:3 aspect ratio only, I reckon.

Hey now, what is wrong with 4:3 aspect ratio, really*? And DVD can have high-res sound.

*) except the wasted real estate on your wide screen TV...

Just in case anyone else is wondering, I watched it via Netflix streaming through my Oppo 105.

An excellent DVD-Audio in 96k 5.0 sound. The corresponding CD release requires two discs, so having the whole thing on one disc is a benefit of the DVD-A format.

I also very much admire the Roger Muraro DVD with documentary on the same work. The Aimard has superior sound, but the visual and documentary by Muraro add a lot.

I have not heard either of the two SACD releases of the work, but I have the Catalogue of Birds recorded by the Japanese pianist, and it has a harshness that soon becomes intolerable. So the other SACD would be the way to go.

Beauty. Thanks!!

Found it at Amazon.de and now on order.

BTW, for those monolinguists here, it's in German with English subtitles.

Nothing wrong whatsoever with SD video on my secondary monitor, but on primary monitor it's another matter entirely.
