Discussion: Miles Davis: Miles Smiles

This great Miles classic is left off the list of Miles' second quintet albums to be released as SACDs by Mobile Fidelity. Can anyone comment on the single-layer JSACD? I gather the master tape itself is subpar, at least compared to other products of Columbia's old 30th Street Studios...

I think the sound quality on the JSACD is pretty good. And the music is just great, probably my favourite from Miles' second quintet.

Maybe MoFi will include Miles Smiles in a later batch of releases?

I feel and think the same. It's my favorite album from this quartet (and of all Miles releases for me then by definition) and features some essential compositions and really splendid playing, especially by Tony Williams and Wayne Shorter, but also Ron Carter.

Nothing in my view there to be dismissive about the sonics, either: they are clearly better here than in the ESP, for instance (a lot clearer and better defined, more immediate), although rather typical of these early-period SACDs: not quite as full and warm as we have grown used to expect from more recent transfers, but nonetheless excitingly vivid, impactful, and allowing full enjoyment of this, what for me very is certainly some of the finest music-making from the period.

(That's as far as the JSACD is concerned, which I have; not sure if it's the same as the US release.)
