I have just seen on an unmentionable website (something to do with a single bit) that Challenge will be releasing the Britten and Weinberg violin concertos on SACD. I am very excited about the Britten repertoire gap being plugged. I have loved this piece since hearing it in concert several years ago (those lovely scales in the final passacaglia movement grab me every time).

I already went for the Chandos 24-bit download, and though I was not disappointed by the sound quality, my initial impression of that performance was not especially favorable compared to Hope (Warner) or Hirsch (Naxos) that I have also heard; of course that is only my initial impression. A multichannel version of this great work will certainly be most welcome to this collector's shelves.

Oh my, that should be a wonderful recording. Roth certainly seems like a fine violinist. Here he is recording and talking about Weinberg:

Hi

On a general issue, isn't the coy, continuing non-recognition or acknowledgement of this wholly non-existent monobit website getting a bit silly...? We all know it's there, and we also all know it tends to get there first in announcing new repertoire.

onebitaudio.com/

There, I said it. Go on, strike me down. I'm cringing already...

Seriously, back on thread, any recording of the Britten on SACD has to be welcomed. This has been missing for far too long!

I, too, downloaded the Chandos, coupling the violin and piano concerti. I'm slightly more positive about Little's reading of the violin concerto than you, but feel that the piano concerto with Shelley - a fine, urgent and nuanced performance, came off rather better.

It's great, nevertheless, to fill in the Britten repertoire gaps on SACD in his Anniversary year!

Jon

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Zeus prohibits links to sites that SELL product - he wants folks to buy products via the links here because then this site benefits from that. Onebitaudio only has links to the SACD label sites (which are also on this site) so I don't see why it would be forbidden here.

Not before time but the recent recording by James Ennes on Onyx will take some beating red book or no red book. That was a lost opportunity if ever there was one. Onyx 'though remain disinterested in SACD.

No they don't; they have sponsored links to amazon.com underneath all of the items that the US sight stocks/lists. Nothing wrong with that though; for all the effort they put in you can't begrudge them a buck back somewhere?!

You are correct! I didn't scroll down far enough to see the links to Amazon. Sorry for the misinformation folks.

There seems to be a fundamental misunderstanding here of the role of SA-CD.net vs other sites. SA-CD.net is a review site. It aims to provide as much information as possible (details) on which to base purchasing decisions. Often this means waiting until fuller information is available before stuff can be listed. It's not a rumour site, nor does it take the simple path of just replicating listings on vendor sites. Life would be a lot easier if SA-CD.net just had to provide a cover image and links on where to buy it. If that's all you need your interests are probably better served elsewhere than here. Finally, as the site you mention is now a commercial site, it has to stand on its own feet to make its way in the world.

Thanks, I hear what you say.

Nevertheless, I cannot be alone in stating that - in the past - one of my main reasons for checking out SA-CD.net was always to see what goodies were in the pipeline and about to tickle my eardrums.

This Forum no longer meets that specific need; as you note, it seems to have intentionally abrogated providing that service.

The aforementioned site meets that need, and quite reliably. Others, of course, it does not. And this Forum does. It's as simple as that.
