Maybe, but it's only 2 channels.

I used to have a 4.0 setup until very recently, but when I got the Lavry (and an LP12 for vinyl), I abandoned surround because it was nowhere near as enjoyable as stereo, whether analogue or digital. Even albums like Dark Side of the Moon which have a great surround mix, I now prefer to listen to in stereo. If I moved into a larger flat and had the money to invest in an outstanding surround setup, I'd go for it again, but until then, in my current flat, surround just can't match stereo for toe-tapping excitement.

If your listening in stereo the Marantz SA11-S3 is unbeatable amongst modern players almost on a level with the SA7-S1 Reference. I am confident in this opinion from extensive personal usage experience. There is currently an affordable near-mint SA7-S1 on the British site Hi Fi for Sale .com

Thanks, I was considering the SA7-S1 as well, but giving slight nod to the SA11-S3 because of added flexibility as a DAC. Good to know that they are close in quality. How does SA11-S3 compare with the Oppo 105 I hear so much about? I'm interested in the Denon dcd-A100 (100 year anniversary sacd player), but I suppose it's a rare bird and not many people have heard it.

The Marantz costs 3 times as much. The Oppo will play everything, the Marantz does not. The Marantz has better build quality. Much of your decision depends on what you want the player to do.

My advice, save up and get BOTH. You won't regret it. Marantz can be had at a discount. Oppo, not.

This way you have ALL your bases covered.

My salesperson at Music Direct (in Chicago) personally owned a Marantz SA7 (minus the Puccini U Clock) and lamented the fact that the newer SA11S3 sounded better (at a much cheaper price point).

Rammiepie are you able to confirm that the BDP105 has balanced analogue outs for stereo and can play Blu Ray Audio discs and output stereo information from this format in analogue form? Is SACD processed and outputted in DSD and Blu Ray solely in PCM? So how do they pull off that trick?

If all the 'yes's' come up I may as well buy one to see what all the fuss is about...

The OPPO BDP~105 definitely has balanced analogue outs and can output pure DSD into analogue out (and DSD HDMI out) and BD~V and BD~A are of course PCM.

For $1199 what are you waiting for? Maybe you'll turn into a video junkie for 2014. The picture is really superb as is the sound.

The OPPO 105 can bitstream DSD via HDMI if you want it decoded by any AVR. It can also decode DSD direct to analogue (for both phono and XLR outputs) as long as no audio processing takes place (re: speakers setup) and HDMI Audio is set to off. It's a very capable machine when it comes to functionality!

What am I waiting for? As far as my music is concerned I am a very contented man, no problems so no need of solutions. The Oppo is a solution without a problem but it looks nice in silver and very covetable. I have a few very highly regarded CD players lying around like the CD12 and CD7 that once gave me near-joy, now too much loved to part but no longer worth the spin as the SA7 trumps them all. That's what worries about more acquisitions - like my recent 12 month foray into the SA11S3 world - will the Oppo ever get used even if it has BD-A capability that proves inferior to SACD and cannot match the SA7 on home territory.

hiredfox, I hear you. I have more equipment in my arsenal that one can shake a stick at (an old Yankee expression).

In stereo SACD playback, the OPPO won't hold a candle to your SA7/Puccini U~clock combo, but you would be surprised how the BDP~105 acquits itself with classical BD~As. Don't go by Universal's recent BD~A releases which are a sham (although some do sound wonderful).

But it's your pocketbook and if you don't need the OPPO.....then don't buy one (I need it for Mch SACD and of course my other passion in life: home video......in that respect, it IS pretty indispensible!

Give my regards to Nagraboy......aka Watchman!
