Here's another one that Harmonia Mundi should have directly released.

Does it sound $300 better than the RBCD?

I don't own either, so I can't tell you for sure, but probably not. I assume they did not record it with release in SACD format in mind, unlike the Tokyo Quartet's recordings, for instance. A pity since both are fine artists and we could sorely use a complete set of Beethoven Violin Sonatas. (The one on Lyrinx generally receives bad reviews either from a sonic or performance standpoint...or both!)

It's probably just an "upsample" of this:

Part of the recent review on Audiostream of the new Schiit DSD DAC ($149)
http://www.audiostream.com/content/schiit-audio-loki-dsd-dedicated-dac
discusses the use of foobar to play everything through it's DSD converter and the sonic advantages of doing so. I don't see what the difference would be between that and buying these SACDs (except the cost).

They should have directly released it on a single SACD, not three. It's stereo-only, so that means 4+ hours of DSD stereo would fit on one disc; i.e., all of Beethoven's violin/piano works.

Yeah, it's a shame they didn't record originally in multi-channel DSD and issue it on SACD--like the Tokyo String Quartet's Beethoven discs. I don't understand their marketing rationale, as I'm sure they would have sold a lot of them.

That, of course, would not be a hybrid.

Tokyo SQ releases were Harmonia Mundi USA, this release was Harmonia Mundi France. The US division records a lot in DSD and releases in hybrid multichannel, the French division stopped releasing SACDs a long time ago.

Good point.

It's single~layered, Euell, to begin with......No hybrid and conceivably, all three discs could fit on one single~layered SACD.

Since, AFAIK, Harmonia Mundi is no longer releasing their own SACD product, the 'limited edition' status of these single~layered discs, released through King International, creates a form of paranoia in collectors who are certain to 'gobble' them up!

Awaiting your review, Euell, at the NOT so nice price!
