Now this is interesting, especially given that Hartmann specialist Metzmacher is involved, who recorded the entire cycle before. I'm curious as to how the performances are divided between the conductors. To anybody who loves Mahler and the second Viennese School (esp. Berg), this release is especially welcome. The 6th is mesmerising stuff. Nice to see more work of this important Münchener on SACD.

OMG. I just bought the four-disc complete Hartmann symphonies on EMI, thinking there's no way a complete Hartmann on SACD is in anyone's pipeline. Jeez.

Don't forget Shostakovich. If you like your Shosty, you'll probably like Hartmann too.

Half way through the first disc, and I can already say this is a stunning release. Of course, the music is as good as it gets in terms of 20th century orchestral music, but this is matched by a glorious sound, with a wide and deep soundstage (at least in stereo, but I expect that to be the same in MC), recorded in the Concertgebouw in 2012 and 2013 (apart from nos 4 and 5, which are studio recordings). A must for anyone who loves a good bit of expressionist music and any aficionado of the orchestral work of Berg, Mahler, Stravinsky, Bartok. Also nice to see the packaging being an old-fashioned sturdy transparent double jewel-box. Included is a booklet with a small informative essay on Hartmann's symphonic music.

great review by John. I fully concur. Acquiring this is a no-brainer, if you're into 20th century symphonic music.

I've purchased and am really enjoying it - makes a healthy, much needed change to the endless releases of Mahler, Shostakovich, etc. etc.
