After being unable to play the disc on either of my 2 SACD players, I did hear it as a CD in my car. The music is very nice. But I am returning the defective disc to Amazon. They are selling through "Classical Music Superstore" and will only give me a refund (minus shipping charge?) Anyone else have this problem?

Bill (wehecht) recommended the Blake violin concerto (Leeds)(prev. available on ASV) in his review and I can add to it the Piano Concerto plus Diversions for cello and orchestras as well as many other melodic and welcome works.

I should have taken your posting more seriously. I just purchased a sealed copy from another Amazon third-party seller. My Marantz player will not read the SACD layer.

All Pentatone SA-CD's are produced by the same factory. If there is a problem with a specific disc it has nothing to do with being this specific release.
I am rather proud of, and have very fond memories working on, this recording, with my favourite orchestra (having worked with them from 1985 on numerous wonderful Philips Classics productions) and conductor, Sir Neville Marriner. Sir Neville, who had his 90th birthday this April, conducts with real understanding of these pieces and inspires everybody to perform at their best. We were in the beautiful St Johns Smith Square, which is a fantastic venue for recording.

My comments were not in any way intended as a criticism of the company, Mr. Groot - far from it! Pentatone and Caro Mitis sessions that you engineered are among the best recordings in my collection. I'm a former amateur woodwind player and looked forward to hearing the Howard Blake concertos. This is the only Pentatone disc I've acquired whose SACD layer was not readable by my disc player. If a significant number of copies of this disc have not been returned by purchasers, I will assume that the player is at fault.

As it is a material world a disc can be faulty. It is not necessarily your player at fault. Perhaps you can try the disc somewhere else?I did not perceive your post as criticism, but in the order of posts it seemed to convey the impression this disc can be faulty even if bought new. But there are many copies that are perfectly ok.
I am a bit disappointed by the lack of response this recording received, as I myself found this a truly inspired reading by fantastic musicians of music that has a lot of style and charm, and though perhaps not as “weighty” as the big classics, full of quality.

It must be difficult to attract media attention to new releases of unfamiliar repertoire, and especially frustrating for the creative team when the music has potential to reach a wider audience. There was a Q and A column with Howard Blake in The Guardian's Portrait of the Artist section last year that linked to the Pentatone recording. Here is a brief excerpt from a full-length and very positive review of the Blake SACD posted on Planet Hugill:
"Blake has a remarkable talent for melodic felicity, and many of the musical ideas are highly memorable but he combines this with strong musical structure and emotional depth. This is music which appeals to mind and emotions ... Blake's music is unashamedly tonal... in our modern plural world there is room for all styles, and this disc introduces us to four works which delight and fascinate."

A newly-arrived Marantz SA8005 plays the Blake Wind Concertos SACD perfectly.
Again, heartfelt apologies to Mr. Groot -- and thanks; prompted by his responses in this forum, I was convinced to purchase a newer and better player.
