I have the Mark Elder/Halle performance on SACD and note that the "Pluto" movement only lasts for approximately six and a half minutes. Assuming that the Lloyd Jones version is about the same length, I must assume that the DVD-A/SACD multichannel timeframe doubles that time to preclude it, since without it the disc has a total playing time of 68:33, or is that argument illogical?

Looking at the Naxos web site, the RSNO/Lloyd-Jones reading of "Pluto" lasts for 6:53 on the CD version. Add this to the 68:33 for the current SACD and you're over 75 minutes. This is unsafe territory for multichannel hybrids. Depending on the actual compression ratio achieved, you may be able to fit it all into the 4.7GB, or you may not. Plainly, in the case, it didn't fit.

It would appear that the DVD-A version doesn't carry "Pluto" either. I have no idea why.

What do you guys think to the quality of this version of the Planets. I am tempted to buy it however it has a luke warm review at Classicstoday.com http://www.classicstoday.com/review.asp?ReviewNum=4913 I also have the Colin Davis version (DSD) with the LSO which I am not to fond of and don't want to buy another poor version.

Ok, maybe there's something I'm missing here, but I just played Shostakovich: Symphony No. 7 - Gergiev and it's 78:44. A hybrid, stereo & surround, and by all indications, it's 5.1.

So I hardly see why Philips can put 5.1 DSD on an SA-CD exceeding 78 minutes but not Naxos.

The compression ratio achieved is dependent on the signal.

Is the signal dependent on the bitrate (in PCM's case)?

I'm guessing here, but the lower bit-rate will result in a signal with less ultrasonic content and maybe a higher compression ratio.

Interestingly with lossless codecs, classical generally compresses better than rock. Probably due to more harmonic content which the codecs depend on.

Interesting. Thanks!
