Score one for optimism for the UK vendor asking the cool but obscene price of £740 for this single disc!

Just ordered for a slightly more sensible 95 Euro from Germany....

I have the treasured companion Vanguard disc on Villa-Lobos: Little Train of the Caipiria, Antill: Corroboree - LSO/Goossens

... if this is in the same league, it will be money well spent!

It would have been more sensible to buy a used one from a marketplace seller on Amazonuk than what you did, but people don't often use common sense when buying discs.

?

The used discs on Amazon UK start from around £76. Buying new from Germany costs precisely £3 more, so what's not to like?

If that is 'lacking common sense' then I must plead guilty.

In any case, one of the used item vendors (naming no names) has given me some grief in the past.

Very good recording although it's not one I particularly care for, however another Vanguard SACD that has excellent recording and musical performance which I play at least twice a month is the Thomson: The Plow that Broke the Plains.

Nice. Please advise of SQ and perf when you get it.

The only early Solomon Vanguard I didn't much appreciate was Copland:  Appalachian Spring etc - LSO/Walter Susskind

Sound not as good as the South American classic, and a frankly terrible performance of the Copland. A shame.

That was actually an Everest originally, not a Vanguard, and, while I agree with you about the performance, the LP is pretty good (if that matters any more).

Kal Hi

Yes, thanks, of course it was, but the SACD was released under Vanguard Classics; I assume they must have gained the reissue rights at some stage.

I am sure the original LP of this was indeed a knockout, although I don't have it. I must confess some of my really old Everest pressings are iffy. Ditto original Vanguards.

The Vanguards were cheapo productions originally, were they not?

Anyway, the Reference Recordings vinyl recuts of some of the Slatkin Vanguards (all Elite Productions by Nickrenz/Aubort) were sensational, of course - as are the MoFi SACDs, if you can still get them.

There are some real gems in this repertoire, which I am attempting to hoover up as soon as possible. Have now snaffled the Davrath/Cantaloube.

Happy days!

Cheers

Jon
