Speaking of errors the new Pentatone "The Dream of Gerontius" has (provisional?) cover title "The Deam of Gerontius". Hope they spot it in time - if pentaman is browsing, now you know.

Well, the chamber symphony here is very different to Schoenberg: Orchestral Works - Rattle; for a start, the Rattle disc uses an orchestra instead of chamber forces as the title suggests. As a result, Rattle finds it far easier to spin a long line of the musical argument. Equally, that means the Lubeck forces manage to convey much more of the detail in the score. Both approaches have their merits.
As a performence, raw passion and energy flow from the speakers (never at the expense of intonation) where the Berliner's exude a luxuriant patina. As I already mentioned, the chamber textures allow details to be heard more easily so that, although the longer lines that a full orchestra can bring to this score are "missing", the piece is conveyed in a more cohesive manner. Added to which, the recording here is far better than managed in the Philharmonie which frequently sounds congested. As well as being "easier on the ear", I find this a musically more interesting performance as one can hear links to his other works that just don't come across under Rattle's baton.
The Monn is a well played account of a relatively slight concerto (it was chosen as Schonberg wrote a cadenza for it & it is performed here). As for the Schonberg, it's somewhat reminiscent of Stravinsky's Pulcinella in tonal palette (and this *is* tonal Schonberg). All in all, a recommendable disc that I should have reviewed some time ago!

I only know the chamber version in the recording by Heinz Holliger w/ Thomas Zehetmair/Chamber Orch. of Europe (Teldec 1990), one of my all-time favourite CDs. (and there is of course the Webern-arranged piano & SQ version Schoenberg: Scherzo, Presto, Chamber Symphony, String Quartet No. 3)
At any rate, I shall definitely purchase this Cybele recording.

I love the Brahms/Schoenberg disc from Rattle too; outstanding playing but the recording really doesn't do it justice (and that's leaving all considerations of price and MCH vs. stereo aside).

The Praga string quartet has been in my library for the past three years. You should get it if you don't have it already, as it's superb.
