Hi,
I'm going to Tokyo soon and am interested in buying SACDs. Mostly interested in jazz, rock, and blues. Would appreciate any info (stores, websites, etc.) that might be helpful! Many thanks...

I was in Tokyo just over a year ago and found these two places with a good range: Virgin Megastore in Shinjuku (top floor, standalone display just near counter) and Ishimaru in Akihabara (in the door and turn left). If you can read Japanese, there's more stores listed here:

Alternatively, you can order every JSACD directly through the links on this site to amazon.co.jp. I ordered 3 Extons just the other day (for about Y10,000 including shipping) and am expecting them next week. The check-out pages are available in English so it's relatively easy.

I was in Akihabara, Tokyo yesterday and was astounded to come across an SACD/DVD-Audio specialty shop. Well, it almost is. It also has a handful of XRCDs and audiophile vinyl and such but the entire ground floor is almost completely filled with SACDs. (The other floors are stocked with regular CDs with jazz and classical music).

I thought I'd post it here when a search led me to this old thread. Anyway, here are the details:

The shop is called 'Jazz & Classic' and is a branch of a chain of shops called Ishimaru scattered around the Akihabara district. (The others sell J-pop, DVDs, A/V equipment, etc.) They're also present in a few other Japanese cities.

This is what the shops looks like: http://www.ishimaru.co.jp/store/1100/
The address is also listed here (but only in Japanese). It's the "Soft 3" shop on this map: http://www.ishimaru.co.jp/MAP/car.html

If only such shops existed outside Japan...

*sighs*

Lived in Japan for 11 years and Ishimaru is by far the best store out there. It does help to be able to read Japanese, though, so be forewarned.

They've even got a paper magazine in Japan, or rather a sort of recurring catalog of all known or available discs and players, but mostly the former. It lists some 3,400 titles (all news ones since the previous issue with a picture), a few dozen players of various brands and has a couple of pages with articles about specific discs or artists.

It's called "SACD Journal" as is apparently published by super-audiocd.com, the Japanese site.

Of course, sa-cd.net is a lot more complete when it comes to titles.

As I'm heading for Tokyo next week: is the information given in the earlier posts still up to date?

It's exactly a year (end of July 2008) since I last was there but I think it's still valid. At least the websites suggest so.

Back then, the shop had allocated a lot of shelf space on the ground floor to SHM-CD. In the meantime I assume they've added Blu-spec CD and such.

Yes. I'd also go to Disk Union in Ochanomizu (next stop up from Akihabara). It's a used shop where you can get better deals.

Actually, my hotel is close to Ochanomizu :-)
Thanks a lot both to The Seventh Taylor and flyingdutchman!

P.S.: I'm particularly looking forward to get Esoteric's Kertesz/New World!

Stefan,

Did you find what you're looking for? I'll be in Tokyo next week and always go by Ishimaru and Disk Union. Will be in Shinjuku too, so will stop by Tower there. I always skip Shibuya. Too crowded for me.
