modwright for $2500? Good grief, that's ridiculous and that's on top fo the $1199 you've already spent on the machine.

Just interested in views about how good sounding they are. I would like to concentrate on 2 channels as multi channels is another story all together.
Thus my question how does Oppo compare to the like of DCS, Accuphase, Esoteric,
DCS, etc.If these are the best scoring 10/10 how would the Oppo score.
In other words is Oppo an high end player.

I have had my 95 for almost two years. Is it "high end", that is dependent upon the price point you place "high end" at.

It is a fabulous sounding unit for the price. Is it better than a cost no object player? Of course not, that would be a ridiculous statement.

I have taken my 95 to several of my friends places and played it through their systems. There was always some good points to the 95, and some good points the their own players. Where the Oppo shined, was when it was connected directly to their amp's. And this is how I have used mine since purchasing it. The removal of the pre-amp is more of a positive than a negative to me, but it comes with the caveat that you must have a screen to be able to monitor the volume control.

The 95 is no longer being made, and the 105 is said to have a better sound, but I cannot comment on that. All you have to do is order one from Oppo, and if you don't think it is worth the money, return it. All you are out is the shipping costs. Personal experience in your own system will tell you a lot more than asking people for their opinions; mine included.

Yes, the Oppos are high end. That does not mean that they make others superfluous or that they are as good as any in any applications. They also offer features like MCH and DSD streaming that sets them apart.

All I can say is that, if you are looking for an SACD player or a Bluray player or a universal player, you should audition one.

Why is the cost for the Modwright upgrade ridiculous?
Dan does good work and has happy customers.

Well said. It's hard to find a better value than the Oppo 105 in today's audio market.

So, how would you define "high end," Professor? Is it beauty in the eye of the beholder?

Modwright and Ric Shultz do Oppo 105 modifications. They each describe their work fairly well on their respective websites. I have not heard modified Oppo's from either of them.
However, I was able to compare the Oppo with my own modified/rebuilt Marantz player. With my player the sound images are much cleaner and clearer than the Oppo. I think Ric's output stage for the 105 is fairly similar to what I use in my Marantz. Thus I think his package would likely sound quite similar to my player. Modwright uses tubes, for everything.

If you connect the Oppo directly to your amplifier, you have to use the digital volume control in the player for signal level adjustment.

But hooking the Oppo up directly with an integrated amp, though, would solve that problem.

Sorry, nope. No mod is worth over two times the original value of the machine itself. None.

The answer I am looking for is the Oppo as good as the so called high end players
like Esoteric, DCS, Accuphase, Playback Design etc.
Features required are purely for a stereo set up and money should not be taken into consideration.
Maybe my question should have been does Oppo makes High End SACD players irrelevant
