What is Orfeo thinking? That they can gouge Kleiber fans who can't help but by all of his recordings? I'd love to hear the logic behind releasing a full priced disc with only 35 minutes of music (give or take a few minutes), of music Kleiber recorded in the studio (and available on SACD), where there's even already a live recording on DVD-video.

Yeah seth, but sucker that I am....I fully intend to acquire this as soon as I find it in a store. I just guess some folks never learn. And I, who has urged in this forum that folks show more enthusiasm for newly recorded material as opposed to the endless stream of reissues!

Moreover I already have the DG SACD you refer to. Guess I'm a little nuts, huh?

I have his live recording with the same orchestra of Beethovens 4th. It's one of the greatest orchestral recordings i own (hope it comes to SA-CD also). The sound, specially the instrumental timbres, even on RBCD, are far more natural than on the DG recording (SA-CD) of 5&7. If this is anywhere close it's well worth buying even if one ownes the DG recording.

P.S.: actually they could have added the 4th to this.

Considering the Unitel DVD of Kleiber's concert with the Concertgebouw has both Beethoven 4 & 7, I wonder what was in the first half of this concert. Could someone who speaks German find out from Orfeo what's going on?

It is a multi-channel SACD. The only technical details given are: Stereo AAD, digitally remastered by Christoph Stickel (msm-studios). So it is clearly an analog recording, but probably not an original MC recording.
The Orfeo label is closely associated with Bavarian Radio and known for its high standard. Let us hope they will issue more material on SACD, e.g. Beethoven's Fourth and extracts from Der Rosenkavalier conducted by Kleiber or recordings by Kubelik, Jochum, Sawallisch, etc.

It's not full price, at least here in Europe.

I didn't wait to find it in a "brick and mortar" store, got mine from JPC along with a bunch of Membrans. The price was commensurate with the playing time.

This isn't PentaTone DSD sound. Its not even close. But no one expected that did they? I will just say the sound is more than sufficient to convey the absolute glory that is this performance.

Anyone who has half an interest in Beethoven, especially anyone who might think that one or two of the following movements are less inspired than the first movement needs to get this and listen to it a couple times. Kleiber makes every note count! There is not one measure untouched by genius.

Listening to this was truly so fresh and new it was almost like hearing it for the first time, actually better than hearing it the first time because I thought I knew what was coming, but then some subtlety of phasing catches my attention and I realize I never heard it like this! Oh there are similarities to the DG performance but while that one hints at what might be - this actually goes there!

My advice? Don't quibble over its price, don't hesitate! Buy it now!

Do I sound sufficiently awe struck yet?

The Desert Island Scenario:

If I were told I had to sacrifice all my LPs CDs and SACDs but one, this would be the one I would keep. I would not like parting with op 131 by the Prazak but for me, this is an even better experience, an even more precious gem.

I have the RBCD of Beethoven 4 with the same orchestra, it has the same recording date, seems very likely it was the other part of the same concert.
Really skimpy not to release them togehter on SA-CD (the 4th is only avaylable on RBCD unfortunately, and with no filler either).

The 4th will be released later this year, broken across 4 seperate discs.
