Perhaps I'm just being cranky but is anyone out there really interested in this release? Two Mahler symphonies reduced to piano four hands??? Really??? The only thing worse would be piano two hands (or maybe piccolo). IMO, a waste of plastic. Perhaps the one person who buys this will be brave enough to publish a review here.

Before recordings, most people heard symphonies and other orchestral works not via recordings but via these reductions. There's admittedly less point to them now, but it's still a fascinating window into the past of music.
Also, there's already Mahler: Symphony No. 1 (trans. piano) - Prague Piano Duo out there, and people seem to like it.
That said, I'm like the other commenters in that I'm not so interested.

No problems! I just wish these pianists had been given, say, Schubert instead. There's no end of magical piano duo music relatively unknown, no end of Mahler done "properly" in interpretations to suit pretty much any taste; so really, why? Why?!

We have Wagner lite (for non~opera buffs) and now we can add Mahler lite to the musical equation.
Was it King Joseph II of Austria who accused Mozart of using "too many musical notes" for one of the composer's Operas?
Polly, chalk up this release as the equivalent of "cliff notes" for the "uninitiated!"

Some orchestral compositions lend themselves quite well to piano reductions as exemplified by the piano duet versions of Dvorak's Ninth together with Smetana's Die Moldau performed by the Prague Piano Duo on Praga. Others just don't translate so well, such as the Wagner piano arrangements performed by von Eckardstein on a recent MDG recording. The Mahler symphonic reductions I suspect fall in with the Wagner.

Mahler it seems could not keep his hands off the ladies, hence the cunning plot to write a version for cuddling up.

I have to disagree; the Wagner transcriptions are of a wholly different class of piano wizardry and make the work of Walter sound most prosaic.
