Howdy all...

Are there any places left in the US where one can physically browse for SACDs?? Or in this day and age, are all of the physical stores all gone and one must use the online places??

Many thanks!!!

Flea markets.

Currently, new SACD releases are:

- single inventory hybrid SACDs of classical music: to be found among classical CDs in stores

- limited edition releases by audiophile labels (Mobile Fidelity, Analogue Productions, etc): generally not available in music stores. Sometimes in hifi stores.

- japan imports : not available in music stores, except by special order

J&R in NYC has a good selection of new CDs and SACDs. Newbury Comics in Boston also has a decent selection. If you're looking for used you have lots of options, although Academy Records in NYC and the Princeton Record Exchange are particularly good for used classical, and Amoeba (locations in LA and SF) has a decent selection as well.

And, there's still lots of small independent record stores (not nearly as many as before, but still), although pickings for SACDs tend to be slim there.

I think Newbury Comics' store is pretty much dead and gone for SACD at this point, and Princeton Record Exchange's selection is fairly sparse as well. I've never had any luck finding SACDs at flea markets - in fact, I've never had any luck finding just about anything I wanted at a flea market! Goodwill and Salvation Army do have some decent CDs and DVDs (never any SACDs), once in a while - I just found Elvis '68 Comeback 3-DVD set for three dollars in pretty nice shape at a Goodwill in Connecticut this weekend.

On the west coast we have Amoeba Records in LA, SF, and Berkley, Music Millenium in Portland, and Silver Platters in Seattle. All brick and mortar stores with SACDs still in the stock.

Our local FYE is closing its doors next week and all sales are final so if one could even find a used SACD would it be worth it?

Reading the above posts is a distressing state of affairs as most cities still somewhat cater to hi rez but for those who don't live near or in these metropolises will have to rely on the internet.

Just received 20% off my recent AP and MoFi purchases (w/free shipping and No tax) so it's safe to guess that buying online is still the most cost efficient and effective way of getting what you want.

For all others it's a veritable scavenger hunt!

Agreed re: flea markets. They're a constant disappointment. In the end, they're just not selling nice things there.

I haven't been to Newbury Comics (or Boston generally) in over a year, but a few years ago I got a ton of Telarc SACDs there for $4-$6. They still have a lot of Telarc I think, although stock has thinned. As for the Princeton Record Exchange, it's very hit or miss. One time I found all kinds of bargains there on SACDs in their cheap bins, other times I've found nothing. It's a great store though, with phenomenal prices on classical RBCDs as well.

It was an intentionally snide remark although I have been lucky at flea markets. Of course, one cannot go with a specific expectation.

That said, it seems that I have lost the desire to pore over bins of discs the way I used to for LPs when I was younger. When I am at J&R for other things, I am drawn to the SACD collection but I actually prefer the ease and flexibility of Internet browsing.

Yeah, but even J&R's hi-rez selection is pretty slim pickins' - generally speaking, brick and mortar shopping for sacds is like going to Marshall's or Ross Dress for Less and trying to find a specific pair of shoes or shirt that fits - yeah, it may happen, but don't plan on it. The internet really is the only practical option anymore, albeit a very dangerous one, pocketbook-wise!
