I had the same problem with the disk. I order it by Amazon and returned it twice since it is the only disk that does not work properly. I also have the Yamaha S2300 DVD. I will be interested to hear if there is something to do.

*********UPDATE********UPDATE**********UPDATE*********UPDATE********

Yamaha has confirmed that there is a problem with their players with regard to this disk and others like it. I'm told that they will be doing a firmware update in the next month or so. Consumers will need to bring their players to an authorized Yamaha repair facility for a replacement of the chipset.

Apparently there is a difference in the way disc one was made compared to disk two of this set. They said that there was "no way" the other store's unit could play this disk in SACD mode. However, I saw it play in SACD mode with my own eyes.

It has been several months since that last update and I still have not heard back from either Yamaha or the store where I purchased this equipment. I am considering taking it all back for a full refund toward Denon models if they don't make this right very soon.

Are there any other Yamaha owners with this problem out there?

I had a similar problem with just one disc that threw my player out of alignment. The problem then started to manifest itself with previously good discs. I went through an alignment procedure (different for each player) and got a replacement disc and it's been fine since. This was well over a year ago.

I have had a similar problem with a Pioneer DV-563A. Two different copies of "Tommy" bought at two different stores have skips at the same point. These were used discs(ok, I'm cheap) and now it seems unusual that there were three copies of this available. From memory it was track 5 abought 42 seconds into the song, (from memory, I'm at work right now). This is too weird to be a coincidence. It occurs to me now that these were bought and returned when the previous owner had the same issues. The stores them put them out as used. I have had no other problems with other sacd (hybred or not), mostly Columbia's Dylan reissues. Any other comments out there on Geffen's Deluxe Editions??

Thanks

Update: two months later and I still do not have my DVD player back from service. To make matters worse, no one from the store has bothered to call me to let me in on the secret. I keep calling and getting the run around. "We're really busy; the chips were ordered last week; the chips came in but they were the wrong ones, the chips came in but one was bad; the new circuit board will be here next week"... I've had it up to my ears.

So, what should I do? I can probably convince the owner that they should just refund me my $ and then I can either get a new Yamaha MK2300II from them or the Denon 5900 by anteing up another $1,000. All the reviews I've read praise the Yamaha's features and sonic performance at the

Given the runaround you claim to have had from Yamaha, I don't see why they deserve your future custom. I'd look at something like the Sony SCD-CE595 as a cheap standby. You may even find that you like the sound better.

I agree with Stephen. If you want an SACD/CD player I would seriously consider a Sony; if you need DVD-A one of the higher end Denons would be my recommendation.

Hallelujah! Kill the fatted calf! My DVD player is home at last! I got it back from the dealer in early October but was unable to hook it up. We are doing a make-over in our house and the media room was disassembled as I patched, sanded, primed and painted. Unfortunately, the primer failed and we had to redo the whole room...twice along with the rest of the house.

Fortunately, I took advantage of having access to the wall behind the audio stand and big, heavy CRT-TV to make some improvements. I ran an ethernet line back to my office and added 4 video home runs from an RF splitter in the crawlspace rather than splitting it up on the room side of the wall. I also added speaker wiring to be able to use the 9.1 set up permitted by my Yamaha RX-v2400 receiver. Didn't want to pop for new speakers until I tried it so I moved my KEF bookshelf speakers on stands and connected them to the Surround-Back outputs then watched Day After Tommorrow in Neo6:Cinema DTS sound! I added these to an existing 5.1 system consisting of matched Snell E.5 towers and a C.5 center with (upfiring) Sonab A-12s as rear surrounds. Wow, was I ever impressed!

Played just enough of Tommy in multichannel mode to be sure the SACD repair worked but I am not sure the extra surrounds are engaged in audio mode. Didn't have time for a more thorough review at that juncture.

I am convinced that adding "rear" surrounds as well as front "presence" speakers will enhance the overall theater experience. For the moment, I pigtailed the L-R presence speaker outputs to connect with the mono center speaker input on the TV. That is not the best test, I'm sure, but it did add something to the sound mix that may be worth the extra investment in hardware if I can convince Mrs. Santa that we really, really, really need more speakers. I've read favorable reviews of re-engineered in-wall speakers lately which may be perfect for the extra presence effects without breaking the bank or adding more towers to the smallish room while I still have some fresh paint left for touch ups.

For those WHo have not ordered superdeluxe edition yet: BD-A contains 2 ch PCM and DTS-HD MA 5.1 formats. Stereo of uncompressed PCM suffers heavily EQed mix, that is almost unbearable to listen to - too bright too loud too unpleasant musical experience. DTS-HD MA 5.1 contains the same SA-CD mix from this deluxe edition.

If you are not for the printed (nicely done) book AVOID IT! You have been warned.

I retain my SA-CD edition.

The SACD edition of TOMMY remains one of the best multichannel Rock albums I have in my entire collection.......

Absolutely no need here for double dipping!

Are you certain that the 5.1 mix in the new box set on BDA is the same as the SACD? I read somewhere that it was remixed yet again by Townshend for the new box, and the book in the new set says nothing about using the 2004 mix.
