Totally agree with John. A very welcome addition to the catalogue with superb acoustics. Is it me or does 88.1k sampling actually sound more realistic than 96k? It's not the first time this observation has occurred to me so how could that be, certainly it isn't logical. Polyhymnia are good but so are a lot of other folk who record at 96k.

I have observed the same thing regarding the sampling rate. I think the conversion is easier going from 88.1 kHz PCM to DSD. Less steps...less decimation...a truer sounding transfer.

We have had the opportunity to compare this new RCO Live recording with 4 other SACD versions in our collection plus about 6 on RBCD and a couple on vinyl. Yep, we are heartily sick of the whole thing as you can imagine.
No question in our minds this new RCO version is a very fine performance indeed matched by an equally fine recording by Polyhymnia. Others may not agree but for us this is a very clear first choice for this magnificent work. An impeccable, faultless performance in an almost ideal acoustic. Very strongly recommended.

What were the other versions you compared?

I'm curious about any views on how this release compares to Jarvi/RSNO or Mitropoulos/NYPO.

John, perhaps you would be so kind as to identify the 4 SACD versions, 6 RBCD versions and two vinyl versions to which you compared the new Jansons recording?

Hi. Sure. Travelling at the moment but will settle down to it when back at home.

On a different tack, but bearing in mind an adjacent thread about Kobayashi, how are Janson's vocalisations on this recording? Better or worse than usual?

Here we go
Vinyl: von Karajan / BPO 1967, Svetlanov / USSRSO
SACD: Gergiev / MO, Bychkov / WDR, Caetani / OSM, Jansons / RCO (new)
RBCD: Berglund / BSO, Mravinsky / LeningradPO, von Karajan / BPO 1980, Jaarvi / RSNO, Haitink / LPO, Polyansky / RSSO
Both von Karajan's are superb and have established the benchmark for this work. Trying to compare performances across formats in a short period of time is not straightforward as you will appreciate but in reality it boils down to whether or not you believe the new Jansons account improves upon von Karajan. Jaarvi's RSNO version is very good as well from a time when he was at his peak but never the equal of the German maestro.
