PS. There have been reports in a german HIFI Forum that the BD-Audio Discs will be FNAC exclusive til september... No reason was given, though.

It was stated in a press conference presenting the launch of the format.

Exclusivity deals are a marketing decision. Universal gets something in return for granting FNAC the exclusive right during 5 months (which is quite long).

Interesting... that must be quite something since actually one would think that a label would be interested in a wide market access with a new format and not a single outlet.

But if they think that works...

Frank uses euro, these days.

I know but it would've ruined my pun.

Maybe France should have stuck with the Francs and possibly avoided a recession.

It seems that the Kleiber Beethoven BD-Audio is stereo-only, even though the DVD-Audio and SACD were both in MCH. It's a bit surprisingly MCH is being ignored so completely even when it should have been easy to include.

All of Beethoven's Nine Symphonies in multichannel could conceivably be contained on ONE BD~A disc.

And the mere fact that Kleiber's Beethoven has already had two prior hi~rez mch releases and will now be released on BD~A sans the mch track is a further recipe for disaster.

I was quite looking forward to this launch but with the repetition of titles and the lack of multichannel and the general public's confusion about the nature of BD~A (NO video) my enthusiasm for the success of this endeavor has diminished greatly.

Naxos which promised us 2 BD~A titles a month has also lagged behind with mostly lackluster titles and variable quality (the surrounds are barely audible on some of their BD~As).

Another Much Ado About Nothing launch as the folks at Universal, making the decisions, are permanently OUT TO LUNCH!

My own take on BDA is that UMG seem to be making the same mistakes with the marketing as they did with SA-CD, that is a lack of information. Basic information for me is whether or not a disc is offered with surround sound, if it is not, it is of no interest to me. Next offer me some titles that I don't already have on SA-CD.

That said, I am still not keen on the BDA format as it limits you to playing the disc only on your BD player or PS3. The hybrid SA-CD is far more versatile and I can play the disc elsewhere where I have a CD player. Buying a new BDA disc would mean that I would be buying an expensive disc and then need to buy it again in a different format if I want to listen to it elsewhere, or is the strategy to only release older titles, the thinking being that we already have the CD or tape of it?

Finally, and perhaps the most important consideration for me is that most hybrid SA-CD discs are available at very reasonable and affordable prices thanks to the hard work and vision of the companies that care about music and release in this format. So it means I can enjoy a high quality surround sound experience and get the most out of the music that I enjoy listening without paying inflated prices for often very old material. I can get 2 hybrid SA-CDs for the price of one BDA and have I would suggest a comparable listening experience, with the bonus of being able to play the SA-CD elsewhere.

I would love to know more about the thinking behind UMGs strategy with BDA, but as far as I am concerned my continued support and purchases are for SA-CD and am grateful to all those companies that listen and give myself and others what we want. I fear UMG are not listening, they stopped doing that when they dropped SA-CD releases it seems.

Diana Krall: The Look of Love costs less than 10€ on the french Amazon, whereas the BD-A costs twice that.
OK, Velvet Underground & Nico: The Velvet Underground & Nico is a dreadfully priced SHM SA-CD, I can grant that, but same thing regarding the BD-A : 20€ are still a lot to spend for a vainly remastered low-fi album.

For the moment, this BD-A won't change the purchasing habits of SA-CD fans.

SA-CD remains honest.

Even though I ordered Supertramp, the only one I was interested in, without surround option, new artist I will stick with SACD.
