Discussion: Dvorak: Dumky Trio, Beethoven: Archduke Trio - Guarneri Trio Prague

That is an OLD photo on the cover, the hair-styles harken back to the Seventies -- but then, hair moves slower in the Czech Republic. Nonetheless, the dark brown hair of the cellist on the cover is now silver in the group photo on the Praga website. All this set me to wondering: WHEN was this music recorded?

I finally found the information on a US vendor's site: 2000 for the Dumky, 2004 for the Archduke. Does that somehow explain the lack of multichannel, a feature on most of the GT SACDs? And is it perhaps a PCM recording?

Personally, I would not bother with this when the more modern Dumky is also available from Praga, in Mch to boot. It is quite outstandingly good. And, I consider the Dumky Trio to be one of the very greatest piano trios, and one of Dvorak's most superb and inventive works. The newer version is well worth the considerably higher cost, even minus the Archduke.

I have the newer Dumky Trio on Praga and heard the piece live last year. Would definitely recommend the piece and the recording.

I have Dvorak: The Piano Trios - Guarneri Trio Prague, nice Dumky... but in my wife's opinion, we cannot own too many Archdukes. I am currently stalking a copy of Beethoven: Cello Sonata, Piano Trio - Stark, Shteinbouk, Belkin.
