Discussion: Allman Brothers Band: Live At Fillmore East

As much as I've always been an ABB fan, all these new issues of Fillmore East are starting to wear me out! I did purchase the Japanese SACD - so, to start the discussion rolling (though I kinda think I know what the answer is) - what does Analogue have to offer that I don't already have?

But let's see.....LIVE started out as a DTS mch RBCD with some sort of channel reversal in the rears, then as a hybrid mch SACD from Universal US, then as a SHM~SACD and now as a MoFi stereo only remaster not to mention the multitude of RBCDs reissued since the album's inception.

Lunna....if you have the SHM~SACD....I think you're covered! I heard a cut from LIVE on the SHM~SACD sampler and it sounded superb.

Brothers and Sisters will 'debut' on SACD from MoFi and that is where you should spend your $$$$$$ (as will I).

I bought all of their first five albums as a teenager - I do have the SHM-SACD, yippee! Despite the so-so reviews, I purchased (but haven't yet played) the MoFi ABB debut disc. While that, and Brothers and Sisters were my least favorite of the five back then, I have no choice, now, do I, but to get the MoFI B&S too :) Thanks!

PS - I'd love to see Europe '72 come out on SACD some day too!

No other pre-release comments/buzz? (Not holding my breath on the MFSL SACD version, or the Santana SACDs either, which have been promised for what seems like forever)....

Hi guys.

Id stick with the shm sacd of fillmore east. I don't think the Mofi can match it.

Cheers,
Rembrandt

I did a rather poor job of explaining myself when last we spoke. With regards to the shm sacd program and multichannel......there is a reason why they will not venture into multichannel. It is because they are not only trying to make the best sounding sacds....they are also trying to take care of a problem inherent in sacd playback That being the decibel level between the dsd studio master and the sacd we buy. There seems to be, at times a great diminishment between the two. At times the sacd sounds much less transparent and open when compared to the actual master from which the transfer is derived. Ed Meitner was working on this very problem and its also mentioned by Cookie Marenco.

The Shm asacd program is almost fanatical on the space of the disc and how the digital info is placed on said disc.

Hope this helps.

Ohhh....if there was ever a multichannel release on shm sacd.it would be scary good.

Thanks for the explanation, analogue. A mch SHM~SACD would be 'scary good' but alas, doubtful it will ever transpire.

Is there a similar problem with PCM? Since I have a Meridian system it favors PCM anyway (converts ALL incoming signals to PCM) and even LOSSY DTS 5.1 sounds pretty astounding.

Rammiepie.

No problems with pcm signals. And yes pcm can sound good. Meridian makes good products and some of the their hardware costs serious bucks. There was a dvd audio/cd player that made my mouth water...but 18 grand was out of my league.

Cheers

You're referring, of course, to the Meridian 800 which I've had for the past 12+ years (and still going strong).

Just had my Meridian system professionally EQed by Meridian and Meridian despises DSD (well, of course they would).

The 800 plays DVD~A and DD and DTS amazingly well (certainly better than the OPPO BDP~105 which I still LOVE).

The 800 has been out of production for some time, though! Think I paid under $10K at the time for it.
