Sloppy is not a word I used, and would not characterize the first set of performances in that way. I would use the word careful, perhaps, and committed for the second set of performances. There is no doubt that the soloists as recorded are superior to the first set.

One cannot be concurrently "careful" and "committed?" :-)
I have the Grammy winning recording of the SFS Mahler 8 and am not particularly enthralled, but that has to do with the sound rather than the performance. The 8th is a tough one to record due to the size of the forces involved, I suppose.

The strike will soon be over, everyone will inevitably get want they want and in the meantime, Euell, perhaps you should explore the wonderful discreet Blu~ray Audio of Antoni Wit's performance of the Mahler 8th from Naxos.

It's simply amazing!

Well, one could argue that everyone whose work is not sufficiently valued should assert their rights by withholding their labour.

There is a difference between merit and greed. Unfortunately we live in an age of greed and indifference and it's catching on fast. The victims will be those without leverage. The people to end this nonsense are the classical music supporters in the Bay Area by simply staying away. Let's see just how much leverage they have really.

People power still works thank heaven as witnessed here by the recent instant boycott of Starbucks after the press revealed how little tax they pay on UK sales. They sought urgent talks with the PM within one week on "a new way forward" and "to explain our position"....

Meanwhile, ...any news on the Minnesota situation?

I completely agree. Sadly the UK government has yet to close such loopholes & is taking the lack of income out on those least able to bear the strain.

I am glad to see you are (or would be) consistent.

The so-called leverage is the donors in the case of SFS.

I just got my 2013/14 season brochure today...let's hope there is a season! BTW, I don't see any mention of a "Choose Your Own Series"--have they abandoned that option?

It looks like the strike has been settled. I did attend a couple of performances by striking musicians. The orchestra may be performing as early as this week subject to approval of the tenative agreement.

Robert C. Lang

Got a robo-call from SFS. All concerts beginning tomorrow are on as scheduled.
