I love the Brahms/Schoenberg disc from Rattle too; outstanding playing but the recording really doesn't do it justice (and that's leaving all considerations of price and MCH vs. stereo aside).
I beg to differ. I find the overall sound quite satisfying (especially at loud levels), certainly appropriate for the type of music. The Brahms arrangement is in fact pretty spectacularly recorded, on my system at least.
A few weeks ago, I found the disc in my local bricks 'n' mortar. Great transparent recording of the Schoenberg chamber symphony, which is quite apt for this work. First encounter with the Monn and Schoenberg's take on it. Quite fascinating.
