Performance: Sonics: |
The Gentle Ballads series follows the usual Venus pattern. A solid player of the day, Eric Alexander, agreeing to play a straight ahead set in a conservative, MOR way, very un-representative of the music he usually makes. Musically, this is solid if inessential, but is completely ruined by the Venus Hyper-Magnum Sound which is a synonym for highly compressed, loud sonics which destroy all nuance and subtlety in the music.
Maybe one day Venus will release the uncompressed 24/96 masters. Until then, if you must have the music, buy the CD and listen to it only in your car. Or - smarter move - buy one of Alexander's High Note CDs and get both better sound and more interesting music.
