This is a review of the Blu-Ray 5.1 version of Moondance by Van Morrison. The audio equipment that was used for this review included an Oppo BDP-105 disc-player(set-up for multi-channel), a Denon 7.1 receiver, and PSB Synchrony One speakers (7 speakers, no subwoofer).
Bottom-line assessment: This is a superbly engineered recording, with superior sound quality that likely establishes this version as the finest recording of this essential album.
Pro: Superb clarity, remarkable soundstage (despite a rather simplistic 8-channel recording session in 1970), and outstanding musicality from this album that is considered by many to be Van Morrison's finest album. Every song is excellent, but I particularly recommend track 5 ("Into the Mystic").
Con: The only drawback or limitation involves the fact that, at present, the only way to purchase this Blu-Ray disc is to buy the package that includes 5 discs (1 CD version, 1 Blu-Ray disc, and 3 CDs of out-takes from the original recording session). Some may regard this purchase as too expensive.
This Blu-Ray 5.1 version of Moondance is highly recommended.
