This brilliant record, from january 1968, deserves to be mentioned, in the ranges of "Rock Classics".
It's a wonderful, done with the sound, come pare to other CD's.
My hope for the future is, that at least "Steppenwolf The Second" and "Steppenwolf #7", will be released as SACD, as well - Not because they are favorites, but because these two records, deserve to be on the list, with good sound.

What can be said except that this is a classic recording from the 60's. Everyone, their brother and their little dog will be familar with the hits Born to Be Wild and The Pusher from Easy Rider. But the album is not just rock, it also contains blues - Hootchie Kootchie Man from the pen of Willie Dixon, probably my favourite cut on the album, but then there is not a bad cut on the whole disc!
For an album cut in 1968 the sound is simply amazing! Sure there is some tape hiss but the master tapes must have been well treated and looked after to get the sound quality present on this SACD. Powerful bass lines are present. However, cymbol crashes are a little recessed but overall this release blows away all previous digital releases that I have heard. another winner from Analog Productions!

Steppenwolf's 1968 album self titled is a classic of rock 'n roll.... It is an album that I used to think growing up was a "best of" actually.......i guess cause there are just so many great songs on this Album. I have the original LP and MCA RBCD (which I think was mastered by Steve Hoffman...although I could be mistaken on that fact) and now the Kevin Gray mastered SACD from Analogue Productions and IMHO the best of the lot!
This SACD gleams with clarity and warmth all the way thru and offers nice instrument definitio. Although not the best sounding SACD I own I would say that you will pleasantly surprised by just how good this one sounds on glorious SACD!
The song "Hootchie Kootchie Man" sounds awesome with great guitar, organ, vocal, bass and drum seperation. There are some moments on this tune that you will not believe just how good a job Gray did on this one.
And of course "Born to be wild" sounds nice and deep with the heavy organ and fuzzed out psychy guitar work. Again the bass dynamics are heavily exposed on this track with a nice overall well balanced set of instrumentation.
If you are a fan of The 'wolf then I would highly recommend this verison to you......
