Reviews: Counting Crows: August and Everything After

This is the first ever Counting Crows SACD release. And it comes with their first, most popular and, in my opinion, best album.
It's one of the best 90's classic pop/rock/folk albums. All songs are deeply emotional. It's quite difficult to put in to words what each song lyric
represent to me. If you don't know this album you should try it by your own. You won't be disappointed.

This is a Stereo (not 5.1) SACD release. You will not have multichannel layer and it is intended to improve dynamic range and bandwidth.
There is no magic at all, the mix is almost (if not) the same as the CD version. But it's a crystal clear sound. If you already know the songs
and you are the owner of decent system you will be able to surf into the details.

Anyway, recommended only for audiophiles or fans with a decent stereo system.

I must begin by fully disclosing the fact that I haven't listened to the original cd version of this album that I have for some time now, but to my ears, this SACD release sounds great. Very crisp and clean. While I would have loved a multi-channel release of this album, this stereo mix sounds very nice to me.

I am absolutely loving this sacd!! My expectations were low (not entirely sure why) but maybe also because I honestly didn't listen to this album much before. I guess I was worried I wouldn't notice the difference from the original pressing. I couldn't have been more wrong. You can really hear the amazing sound behind this sacd on the first listen. The lows and highs feel perfectly balanced for a sharp accurate listening experience.

This album has aged fairly well, at least compared to later Counting Crows albums. There are more 'dream' and 'sleep' images on this album than I remembered, and they really hit those images hard on their next album, which is why I think "Satellites" sounds so badly today. This album is a bit more acoustic than their later releases, which gives it a little more classic sound. It was personally my favorite album for a few years in the early 90s, so while it certainly comes with some nostalgia baggage, "August and Everything After" sounds about as good more than 20 years after its release as an album from a guy in dreadlocks who dated all the actresses from 'Friends" could expect to sound today.

The imaging seems muddy to me-- songs like "Omaha" have several instruments playing at once, but, listening to this recording, there's not the separation of those distinct instruments that a Mofi SACD would have on a similar style of music. It lacks that crispness and clarity that I would expect from some of the better SACDs. This is my first Analogue Productions SACD, and I'll be wary as to what I purchase from them next.
