Performance: Sonics: |
I was going to start by saying that I am a fan of jazz vocalists doing Great American Songbook songs, but the truth is that while I have bought a bunch of sacds of this nature, I frequently find that the "jazz" treatment seems randomly imposed on and at odds with the underlying material. Happily, that is not the case here. I very much recommend this sacd. While these versions of the material depart from the usual timing or emphasis of the music, everything works perfectly. Heather Masse has a great voice, and she controls it to great effect. Furthermore, Dick Hyman does more than just accompany her; he is an equal collaborator. The sonics are excellent.
