Reviews: Mahler: Symphony No. 2 "Resurrection" - Otto Klemperer

Performance:   Sonics:
This is one of Klemperer's three great studio Mahler recordings, with Das Lied and the 9th--I also like the 4th, but find it a bit ponderous, and don't like the 7th, which practically defines what ponderous means in sound. Spacious, powerful, on the stately side, everything one admires about Klemperer is here in this studio 2nd. There are a number of superb live Klemperer performances of the symphony, several in excellent stere, both of which flow a bit more smoothly, but the studio recording certainly has the best sound. The original British and German LP pressings have a bit more richness and impact, but the SACDs do an extraordinary job of opening up the textures and capturing the sound of the hall, easily surpassing any prior CD transfer. A must have Mahler recording is back, as fine as ever before.
