Reviews: Karajan conducts Ravel

Reviews: 1

Performance:   Sonics:
This is more like it - after his lacklustre La Mer on the companion Debussy SACD Karajan was back on form here.

The Orchestre de Paris play very well, the sound is equally good - and more importantly the performances are really very fine. The highlight is La Valse which comes first, and is powerfully played but with great finesse where required.

Karajan only recorded Le Tombeau de Couperin once, and this is very well done, if not quite as delicate as Boulez's DG version. That is a RBCD of course - but Boulez's Rapsodie espagnole is available on a DG SACD, and it perhaps eclipses Karajan's, fine though it is. Boulez encapsulates the Spanish sensibility rather more than Karajan, though his is more red blooded. Sonically Boulez must have the edge as his more modern recording shows rather more detail and atmosphere.

Recommended for Karafans or those who specifically want to hear some of his best work in the 1970s.
