Performance:   Sonics:
Once again Japanese EMI has added a classic recording of a major work, the Enigma Variations, to the SACD catalog, as well as several superb shorter works by Vaughn Williams, all performed by one of Elgar's and VW's greatest interpreters. The performances, as with Boult's Planets, are sane, detailed, well thought out, beautifully played, and "middle of the road"--a road Boult helped lay out over the years. As with the Planets, I have not heard any RBCD transfer of these recordings, and the SACD transfers are possibly a bit closer to the original HMV LP than the Planets is, with a bit more transparency in the upper strings and perhaps not the bass boost the SACD of the Planets seems to have; but that could also be because the Elgar and VW works have a somewhat lighter scoring than the Holst. Unlike the Planets, the SACD competition here is not as strong, and this seems to me the best choice of the SACD recordings available of these works.
