Reviews: The Voice That Is: Johnny Hartman

Performance:   Sonics:
This album was recorded by Rudy Van Gelder, probably the greatest jazz recording engineer ever! This album, recorded in 1965, is one of my favourite male jazz vocals. Hartman's voice is rich and so smooth. The way he shades his vocals with emotion and feeling is unbelievable. He is my favourite jazz crooner, beating all of the old greats and the new wan-a-bees. There is not a bad cut on this album, but my favourites are "My Ship" and "Waltz for Debbie".

The sound is amazing. Close your eyes and you are in a Jazz Lounge from the sixties enjoying your favourite single malt whisky! The bass and highs are extended. You can follow each and every instrument in the mix. Each instrument (including Johnny's voice) occupies a discrete space in the sound stage. The recording is very 3 dimensional with lots of "air". The soundstage is wide and deep.

Another great remaster from Analog Productions. Highly recommended!
