I am a "lover" of Lucia di Lammermoor and "lover" of operas overall... then if i see a new one on sacd i can't resist !!!!
I think this is a good Lucia, but nothing of special (imho) if compared with the famous singers of the past. Dessay (better) and Beczala are skilled in "painting" the peculiarity of the characters.
Mr. Gergiev and the orchestra did a very good job and, from this point of view, no regrets thinking to the big of the past.
Stereo Sound is detailed, with good rendition of the orchestra and individual voices, but i gave only 4 stars because the choirs (really important in this opera) are too loud .... it seems like they are too near to the microphones. If you calibrate the volume on the voice of Lucia, Edgardo or Enrico .... when the choir enters is too loud, like it sang in front of tenor, soprano and baryton of several meters !
All in all i recommend this boxset and hope that Mariinsky Label will continue to produce operas on sacd.
